Purchasing new furniture

Hi all
We're in the very early stages of a house purchase. We have to buy new furniture including a couch because our current one won't fit. We have seen one we love and it takes 10 weeks to make. I just wondered if people wait until they have the keys and are in the house before they make plans to buy furniture? Whilst 10 weeks is ages without a couch, the thought of buying it and the vendor pulling out is scary as we'd have a couch we no longer need. We have no reason to believe they will but obviously no-one knows what may happen during a house purchase.
Just wondering if people would safely wait or take a risk and purchase later down the sale line, possibly a few weeks before contract exchange?

No, I definitely wouldn't be spending a penny until exchange.
One in three sales falls through - probably more at the mo with all the nervous nellies over Brexit.
Are you sure yours won't fit anywhere? Can you swap the room around a bit (or swap one room's purpose for another's like a lounge/dining room swap?).

We waited until we exchanged (last week) to put down a deposit on a sofa, and are waiting until completion to pay the balance/arrange delivery. We used sofology, and as they had one in stock at our closest warehouse, they say it will only take a couple of weeks to be delivered once we have paid!
So it may be worth you trying them, if they have anything you like?0 -
If I were you, I'd move in with the current couch. make it fit any way you can. Once in, you may well chnage your mind and decide on something else entirely.0

We're in the same position re sofa. We've decided to wait until we're in the property and get a good feel of the room especially when you're judging on whether the furniture would suit/fit.
I'm itching to buy things but just going to hold off0 -
We were in a similar situation and didn't even have an exchange or completion date but decoded to take the risk anyway (and take advantage of sale prices)
We ordered from Laura Ashley. Something like a 9/10 week lead time. When it was ready our exchange had been delayed but Laura Ashley were happy to hold it in their warehouse until we had moved in - which was about six weeks in the end.
Other retailers might do the same - worth asking them.0 -

But what if it had fallen through and the new sofa wouldn't fit in the house you ended up buying?
IMO not worth the risk

TBH I would wait and get the keys. Not because I think things will fall through because I really hope that they wont. Its just when you get there your bits in you may find that you change your mind about where furniture will go.
As for buying the furniture EBAY is the future. Strangely enough I have just got a Laura Ashley sofa £147 on ebay. Getting it collected Thursday. Even though it is a pet free etc home professional clean and wow £1300 sofa for less than £200, 6 months old and immaculate. Last month a got a M&S arm chair for £60.
I got an amazing table and chairs solid wood beautiful bench and seats for 6 people for the office for £180.00.
In fact Laura Ashley themselves have an outlet on ebay. Some of it well ? but some is amazing.
You just have to be patient. Mmmm me neither but if you wait you really can get some amazing bargains. That will mean more money for home improvements or holiday or in true MSE style paying your mortgage.
P.s Good luck with the move.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
Thanks everyone. I think we will wait, OH certainly wants to do that. We can get a cheap sofa to tide us over.
Scary to hear that statistic about the 1 in 3 sales fall through
The current sofa is so huge that it would not fit in many other living rooms. It's a semi circle and although it comes in three pieces that can be separated, it does not look as good in that form. Plus it was mine and OH wanted to choose a new one together. We are leaving this one in the house for renting
Right I'm off to search ebay for Laura Ashley furniture, thanks for the tip BJV :T0 -
I wouldn't buy another Laura Ashley sofa. Our one didn't last very long before the cushions started sagging.
Our Ikea sofa has lasted for 10 years and is still going strong.0 -
The one we like is from Barker and Stonehouse.
Current one was from SCS and is 8 year old without any issues, still comfy and good as new0
