When we first moved in together we used garden chairs in the lounge! Worked fine for us, and was actually quite fun
We've bought second hand furniture from Gumtree and have had some really nice stuff. We got a solid oak bed for the spare room in perfect condition for £80, and had seen similar brand new for about £300+0 -
We ordered a new three piece suite ,before we married and moved into our house, but there were delays and it wasn't delivered for over a month after the move.
We sat on the floor, except when using the dining table...and survived.0 -
I would also wait until I had the keys. I love the first bit when you first get the keys and camp out on the floor eating fish n chips and san miguel
We exchange soon and went looking at kitchens today, I can't sleep I'm so excited but won't buy anything until it's definitely ours.:j0 -
Our first house purchase we bought bean bags.
Wait until you have the keys before you buy furniture.0 -
I've bought furniture for a new house before getting the keys, but only when I knew I could use the items in my existing house if it fell through.
Put your hands up.0 -
Definitely wait until you are in to purchase such a big item.
Also do not rely on any measurements shown online. They can be quite a bit off which is very important if the room is not huge to start with!
Also you might change your mind when you move in. eg the lounge might be very dark so that really dark sofa might not be the best option.
I say live in it a bit then decide what will work for the house.
Above all it saves an hassle of sales falling through/delays etc....0 -
I'd wait until exchange of contracts before ordering anything, unless it will fit in the existing house.0

I contemplated doing the same (but ordering online as you have more cancellation rights under distance selling regulations) however decided not to in the end.
I ordered on date of exchange in the end and whilst waiting for the new one to arrive got a cheap 2 seater sofa from IKEA for £90 and borrowed a futon chair from parents. The sofa took several months to arrive but made do with these two in meantime. In fact the ikea one is still here as was able to put it into one of the bedrooms after (though is mainly used now as a dumping ground for the pile of ironing i have to do MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -
We ordered loads of furniture as soon as we exchanged contracts. As others have said, don't do anything until you have definitely exchanged, even if that means having a gap.
Negotiate for as long a gap between exchange and completion as your chain will agree to, and you'll have less time without furniture.
If you desperately need something for that interim period, look on your local Facebook/Freecycle/Gumtree etc furniture groups - you can usually pick up sofas for less than £50 that would see you through, then you can sell on again so unlikely to cost you much, if anything.
Agree with some of what ellie27 is saying, and would say only purchase at exchange if you're absolutely certain about what you need and how you want to lay the rooms out.0 -

Current one was from SCS and is 8 year old without any issues, still comfy and good as new
The MSE answer in that case is to stick with the old one, maybe buy a new cover if you need it to fit in with the new house's colour scheme.0
