Own a Ford Mondeo. Looking to change it for a new car. What should I go for ?

Hi,

As above, I have a Mondeo. Looking to get either a focus, seat leon or VW golf.

What do you think ? Not sure what to go for ?

I have a test drive next week of a Ford Focus. What else can people recommend that I look at ?

I do not need a big car, do less than 8k miles per year, play golf so need boot space and will keep the car for many years. Not sure about the focus as I will be testing a 1.0 ecobust car where my mondeo is a 2.0 petrol zetec. I am looking to get a 2nd hand car.

I know that the golf will keep it's value but that does not worry me as I intend to keep my car for several years.

My mondeo is now over 10 years old and, touch wood, it is still going good and I am very pleased with it.

What about Jap cars as I think they give a 6-year warranty ?

Anyone please help and advise ?

    What is your budget?

I have a Fiesta with the I.0 Ecoboost engine (125 bhp version) and it's very good in that, but the extra weight of the Focus might be an issue so the test drive is essential I think.

Hyundai and Toyota have Five year warranties.

    Kia have Seven Year Warranties.

But they will likely have a mileage restriction aswell, 100k for Kia if memory serves.

I went from the Mondeo (was my fav car at the time), to the Focus, to the C-Max, to the S-max. Highly recommend the S-max ;)

Correct, Kia have 7 years/100k whichever is sooner. If the OP says he's doing 8k a year, he should be ok though :D

A Mondeo can be cheaper to buy than a Focus with similar running costs so why change?

You golf & you're looking at a Focus? Really? I peered briefly, decided I could perhaps get the clubs in but sock all else and hence turned to a Mondeo.

Trust me, after a Mondeo, all car boots look like broom cupboards, but the Focus more than other vehicles.

Also you will be used to the grunt of a 2 litre engine. A smaller engine will be a learning experience, mostly of having to back down or watch the other car swerve past you snarling. Not pleasant.

Hold my hand up - I'm a serial Mondeo owner, but I run teenagers & we holiday in tents. A lot of boot/head/leg space is a must for me, along with the three diagonal seatbelts along the back & high NCAP rating.

Give a Focus a spin, and an Octavia but try another more recent marque Mondeo & see if the familiarity isn't worth more than the utter novelty.

    Above all, happy motoring!

    I like the new Focus.

Doing 8k a year I would give serious thought to the 1.0 EcoBoost. But Inwould take it for a decent test drive, perhaps with a couple of family members in it to assess the drivability.

I would also look at the i30/Astra/C'eed/Auris etc.

Then buy the one I feel most comfortable in.

Or go left field and get an entry level Evoque!

    Excellent residuals on the Evoque.
  • The KIA looks interesting. I saw one whilst I was driving this morning and it looked a nice car; similar to a focus/golf.

I changed from a Mondeo to a Berlingo. Two very different vehicles. The Mondeo I bought for lugging stuff & people to music festivals. The Berlingo I bought as a mini camper for me at music festivals. I would have kept the Mondeo as my day2day driving car but had no space for both.

Kia's chief designer is the chap who designed the original Audi TT. He's been doing some good work.

Interest to declare: I've just bought one

If you're buying new, I'd get on with it, before the list prices rise [the fall in the pound means that some rises will be on the way, most likely]
