  • As far as noise cancelling headphones for using on aircraft are concerned, I'm a huge Bose Quitecomfort fan (on my third pair).
For watching an IFE film or listing to music on board I think that they are fantastic.

However, when listening to music in my home, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 215 phones and although these were far cheaper than the Bose, IMO they give far better music reproduction.

I am currently enjoying a pair of Sennheiser Momentum. Simply a great natural sound and very comfortable. Also rate the Senn RS120 II wireless set. I've had and sold a lot of Sennheisers this year and really rate them. Wish I could get some HD800s but that's not going to happen.

For earphones I have a pair of Final X Piano Forte and the sound is truly astounding.

If you have a Richer Sounds near you, they do a 'try before you buy.'
I don't like morning people. Or mornings. Or people.

What's the most important aspect of headphones? It's usually sound quality. When you was in JL did you come across any Bowers and Wilkins sets? Shure, Grado and Oppo make some cracking pairs too. Some are out of the price range though.

Comfort and noise cancelling are secondary. The AKG sets I think you're referencing have great sound quality according to reviews. They do have noise cancelling but the sound quality is better than the equivalent Bose, however on noise cancelling alone the Bose will win.

What sound signature do you prefer? Warm and bass? Bright and treble? Balanced and flat?

What type of music do you mainly listen to? What source will be using? Phone? CD Player? Laptop?

What level of quality will this music be in? If it's anything less than lossless (CD quality). Some headphones will readily show up the flaws with poor copies and recording so it won't sound good. Such as MP3's or ITunes downloads.

What type of headphone are you after? On ear (Supra-aural)? Around ear (Circum-aural? Are you bothered about having an inline remote for changing tracks or volume? (You need a compatible device obviously).

Take a look at some of the tech specs you come across with when you browse these headphones as they will help you decide.

I'd steer you towards Richer Sounds tell them your needs and you can try on sets. Really good customer services and guarantees. Plus if you're a Quidco member you can get a percentage of cash back by purchasing in store if you pay with a credit or debit card you've registered with Quidco.

    Happly listening.

What happened to the first two pairs?

Do they not last very long or did you lose them?

    Or did you upgrade models?

As far as noise cancelling on trains and buses is concerned, I'm a big fan of an £8.99 pair of Stanley ear defenders over my existing Sennheiser earbuds. That keeps the noise out far cheaper than ANY pair of noise-cancelling phones, won't be susceptible to any kind of electronic failure, and doesn't require any battery power. I'm sure this would work equally well on a plane.

    Why not?

Plug a pair of earbuds in, such as these

put the ear defenders over them, and...

However, if you mean the socketry at the seats is different, there seem to be adaptors all over the interweb.

The first pair I had were the Bose QC2 and I had these for a fair few years. They finally died (or rather, were killed) when I had them on a flight to the US and someone managed to sit on them.
I contacted Bose in the states and for $106 ($100 + tax) they took them off me and supplied a brand new pair of QC15 headphones. (they have a similar service in the UK but charge a lot more).

This replacement pair was leant to someone about a year ago and they liked them so much they bought them off me and I purchased a replacement pair, again from the states where they were far cheaper than in the UK.
