FTSE was down 10% at open and closed 2.5% down today and IIRC its still higher than it was a couple of weeks ago.

There are a lot of international and foreign companies on the FTSE100.
The FTSE250, which includes many more British companies, lost more than 7%.

    You were warned.

Thanks so much for all the advice. I've been doing a lot of reading and the consensus that seems to be emerging is that house prices will drop temporarily and then climb again, albeit at not as vertiginous rate as they were set to. As we don't intend to move again for at least 5 years, I think we'll press ahead. We don't really want to put our lives on hold for this. There will always be ups and downs but if we can ride them out, I reckon we'll be all right. We may see if we can negotiate another reduction but I don't think we're going to pull out completely.

I know that goes against some people's advice on here! What can I say - if it turns out to be a massive mistake, I'll feel like an idiot for not listening! But there are many others saying go ahead and we really want to get on with our lives!

    Thanks again :)

You mean international companies rather than foreign companies.

The FTSE 100 is trading higher now than it was two weeks ago. These large multinationals benefit from a drop in the £, as exports are cheaper. Market sentiment at the moment therefore appears to be holding up. Defensive stocks such as Pharma and Health are up about 5%, so it is not all bad. The indices that really suffered are the german and french ones.

What is really interesting, and relevant to the OP, one of the Mums Net links they created reads Housebuilders plunge by 40% ! No they didn't. The property fund I use was actually at the highest it has ever been up 4.11%.

This kind of manipulation is dangerous. There may be a crash in the coming months, or there may not, but using your own selfish agenda to bring about one is pathetic.

Hindsight is always perfect and none of us know the future.
Even the pundits were wrong about the results of the referendum. As you're not planning to move for at least 5 years you have hedged your bets as well as you can.
My only advice would be to make sure that the house you pick, you could live in for 10 years if everything goes south. That way you have protected yourself as well as humanly possible.

I think you have made a very mature and sensible decision based on assessing your personal circumstances, rather than punditry from those with nothing at stake and no crystal ball to stare at/blame.

Well done, have a great life in your new home.

Earlier today post no 52 of this tread which has now been edited at 12:23 to read 'Double Post' linked DIRECTLY to this thread and this mums net thread crowing that they are trying to change market sentiment but with with a 'careful now, we don't want to be too obvious' warning.

Please note to have a double post you need an original post at the same time. There isn't one.

What will happen next is SoSophie, full of hope and optimism for the future will have her dreams dashed as her chain collapses as under the weight of all the buyers offering 20 or 30% less than the agreed price, isn't that the plan, spunko2010 HPC Veteran. (HPC Stands for House Price Crash in case you were wondering).

I also read the "double post" before it was amended and also saw the Mumsnet links. If they've nothing to hide, why delete it?

Sadly every new poster who mentions Brexit in their first post I am now taking with a huge pinch of salt. :( Sorry to any genuine posters.
