I have spent hours and hours reading all the posts and links on the subject of windows updates not working. I have tried everything that has been suggested but windows update still does not work. I have Vista and have had no updates since June. Up until then I had no problems whatsoever. I have read in several places that there is no solution to the problem because Vista support ends next April and Microsoft don't care any more. I do worry about not having these updates and perhaps being vulnerable.

You should think about upgrading to at least Windows 7.

What's the brand name and model number of your current machine?

Dell Inspiron 530. I am having second thoughts about upgrading. I am not techie minded and think it may be beyond me! Maybe I should bite the bullet and buy a new computer, I was thinking of doing that before the updates ceased.

You don't need to be "techie minded" in order to upgrade your PC. They are designed for easy upgrading.
About what are you afraid? Losing your data?
It's really worth the moving to Windows 7. If you don't do it, you'll never learn. It's not difficult.

What is the Service Tag?. Check the label at the back.

Having recently done a fresh reinstall on my Windows 7 desktop pc I chose to automatically update important items and ended up with the updates not working.
I managed to find a solution that worked for me, online (will post details) and now have 175 important updates to install.

These date from 2011 to 2016. Do I need to just install them all, or will the older ones be obsolete?

Do I need to include the malicious tool one, or whatever it is called?

Sorry for all the questions, hope you can help, thanks

If any of the are superseded by another update WIndows will just deal with that when it updates so best practice to select the lot.

Did you install with an image of Windows 7 SP1 or no service pack? I ask because if you don't have SP1 installed you might be better off downloading that manually from M$ and then doing the updates. Otherwise you will find it will do all of these, then do SP1 then probably do some more. If you are not on SP1 then a lot of them will be included in the one file.

Assuming SP1 is installed, Microsoft released a Convenience Rollup a few months back which has all the updates from SP1 up to May 2016.

Edit: If not, SP1 is here:https://www.microsoft.com/en-GB/download/details.aspx?id=5842
    See here too

    You'd also need this:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

Then the Convenience Rollup is here (but you have to use IE to get it)
