Not only that, but my machine got to update about number 205 then decided to reboot, looking at the update history a load have failed to install, I've been waiting hours for a 256kb update for MSE to download (should take seconds on my fibre!), have tried restarting in safe mode and safe mode with networking, no joy. Can't find how to install all the updates that have downloaded but failed to install - wish I was more technically competent so I could migrate to Linux and tell MS exactly where to stick their Windows!!

Is the lack of Windows (in my case Vista) updates necessarily a major problem if one has decent AV protection (I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2016) and I don't use browsers that no longer support Vista, Like Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, and instead use Mozilla Firefox or Opera instead?

Well I Don't know but I would have thought anything out of date could mean a potential vulnerability.

That just tells people how to reset updates. It doesn't say anything about a operating system being vulnerable.

For most people, the vunerabilities found are highly unlikely to be an issue.

I'm also convinced that MS seem to think that every pc is left on all the time (like in offices, businesses, etc) so that the extended time taken to search for/install updates isn't so much of a problem. I find that the average pc user that I get calls from only have their machine on for a couple of hours or so a day, so even with automatic updates the machine never ever catches up with all available updates - couple this with the general windows update issue on vista and 7 and it just compounds the problem.

I can understand MS not fixing vista, as support finishes next year anyway, but it really is about time that W7 Updates issue was sorted, there's 3.5 years of support left for 7.....

    Thank you, that reassures me.
  • No updates on Vista since May this year, which is annoying since I was given to believe support would be given until next year, and based on this paid to have a problem fixed on my laptop.
Wish I'd bought a new computer now.

    .....

But it is these vulnerabilities that allow the nasties to do their work when clicking on random links on the internet.

By patching vulns, you are closing infection vectors, so clicking on that dodgy link, that exploits a certain vuln that you have patched , will have no affect !!

  • Success! Left my computer on for about 8 hours, to search for updates, and eventually told 12 updates available to download, which I did, successfully.
Still a pain though, and I don't think it will be long before I invest in a new Windows 10 laptop.
