Enough so that she knows you are serious but not so much as it leaves a hole in your pocket when she leaves you for your best mate.0

It is necessary to keep a track on money and be judicious, but when it's about picking an engagement ring be more kind towards yourself and go for bigger and brighter one.
You would say that.
I think Spam is a better option.
My partner doesn't like Spam.
I don't like Spam.

Me too!Personally I'd rather spend the money on a honeymoon.
But also, what the heck is an 'engagement ceremony' :huh:My engagement ceremony is in August. It's a small ceremony followed by lunch, with close family and friends.Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -
What the hell is an engagement ceremony?! :rotfl:
No, all "girls" do not like expensive jewellery, so do yourself a favour and if she's said don't spend a lot of money, then don't.0 -

Indian/Punjabi...the ceremonies start with the engagement at which the date of the wedding is set. The families exchange gifts and the celebrations continue until the couple are married weeks later. It's much quicker between engagement and wedding than it tends to be in the UK.

If my OH spent two months wages on a ring I would be furious because if he's done that then the mortgage wouldn't have got paid...unless you're filthy stinking rich why spend so much?0

I think the advert in post #19 is dreadful.
I wonder if the 'future Mrs Smith' has had the future that her '2 months salary engagement ring' promised?
Free of financial worries?
No threat of redundancy?
No worry that the house might be repossessed?0 -

If you are filthy stinking rich, two months wages is an awful lot of money.
Although on a good wage, I was effectively broke when I proposed to Mrs G, so two months wages would have bankrupted me.0
