It depends on what people drink, an incident that stands in mind - there was a group of 6 of us, doing rounds they were on halves / oj / I drink pints - but when it was someone's round I would drink half - when it was my round I ordered a pint, this one girl came up to the bar with me, she tried to order a Malibu and pineapple - luckily I had ordered drinks - when I gave her half lager (she had drunk all ngt) she says oh I fancied a Malibu and pineapple - I cracked on daft and said - uve been drinking lager all ngt!
I don't mind if it's 20p/40p difference - but spirit and bottle juice is a p take xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
I never get involved with rounds. I can't drink more than one or two drinks (either alcohol or soft drinks) so I would end up subbing everyone else. I genuinely don't understand how someone can drink pints and pints of liquid without having to spend all evening in the loo!
I don't find it a problem socially, but I think my friends/colleagues are actually good at accepting that everyone is an individual. I could not be bothered to hang out with people who expect everyone to behave the same and judge those who don't.0 -
When I'm out now, especially larger groups the social convention seems to be to ask if anyone else wants a drink when you finish yours. It seems to work pretty well with a person buying 2 or 3 drinks at a time. The people that drink faster consume more and buy more. People are able to decline a drink and then not feel guilty or pressured into buying anything for anyone else.
I guess it wouldn't work if anyone gets too petty about exactly how much is being spent or who is buying what. But in a relaxed group it seems to work fairly well and you don't end up spending a fortune.0 -
I usually buy rounds at lunchtime with the other bosses, wouldn't expect other staff to but we buy them drinks anyway. If we get too bladdered it usually goes on the company card anyway.
Before when we had kids, we used to go a place called a 'night club', and with friends, whose names I've now long forgotten, we used to buy rounds and would keep drinking until the last person had ran out of cash. Granted back then it was 25p a shot at the blessington carriage. Also why I got in to debt, but I had a hell of a lot of fun doing it.0 -
If I'm out with just another person we'll take rounds, otherwise I just buy my own.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

If people are doing that to you a lot, as soon as you get there, say 'I'm just nipping off to the loo, make mine a [whatever]'.
Not getting rounds in, or begrudging the expense all at once, is fine - so long as those people aren't happily accepting a drink when someone else is paying
Buying a round can seem pricey, but if it's only what you'd spend on individual drinks if you totted them all up, it's the same - sometimes it just seems more!

If I am out with my mother we drink the same thing so rounds are fine and she buys 3 at last orders..
If out with my (singular) friend we buy our own.. but we usually do lunch rather than a night out so only have 1 or 2..
If out with OH.. one of us pays.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

You could opt out of rounds - just say you'll get your own - I don't see why that would be a problem. If you're uncomfortable just saying it then you might get sneaky - maybe get there first and have a drink in front of you before others arrive, or nip to the loo/cashpoint/phone when the first round is being bought and say you'll grab one for yourself when you get back. Or say you want to take it slow tonight so you'll get your own, or say you don't have much cash on you so will get your own, etc. Once you're 'out' of the first round then just moderate your drinking so you're 'out of sync' with the rest.
To the OP - I usually go in rounds with small groups of friends and don't really count - if I end up going first and last then someone else will probably do it next time. This (below) also works for me.When I'm out now, especially larger groups the social convention seems to be to ask if anyone else wants a drink when you finish yours. It seems to work pretty well with a person buying 2 or 3 drinks at a time. The people that drink faster consume more and buy more. I don't drink often anymore - so don't bother about the cost once in a while. But I'm regularly shocked at the price of drinks so I imagine if you do it regularly then it adds up to quite a lot!0 -
I hate rounds... I drink slowly and don't drink beer usually more expensive drinks so I always say I'll get my own but some people insist.. I know it sort of works in my favour but I'll probably have less drinks than everyone else and don't want to feel guilty about picking a more expensive drink. To get round this I usually order a bottle of wine if staying somewhere a while! Rounds work if you're all drinking beer I guess?Trying to lose weight (13.5lb to go)0
