I am looking to get an iphone 5, its an upgrade from my 4, I can't afford one of the newer versions.
I just wondered if it is worth it, I do not want to be in the situation as with my 4 two years down the line.
My iPhone 4 still works (just) but only functions as a phone. I am unable to use/load any apps as I don't have the storage space, over the year its has kept upgrading itself to the point where all the storage is taken up with the OS, I can't even take a photo now due to no storage space
My 4 is a 8GB, the 5 I am looking at is 16GB (the 32GB is double the price, which is too much)
Will the extra 8GB between the two make any difference or in a few months with the OS keep getting updates will I have the same space issue with the 5, ifs thats the case I might as well keep the 4 and save my money.

iPhone 5 is slated to receive the September update to iOS 10. Can't comment on performance but I'd imagine it'll be OK for your needs.
My brother has an iPhone 5 and is pretty much happy with it; in terms of storage I'd suggest the Google Photos app (over iCloud) as you can hold unlimited images on there. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
5s or 5c would be available cheap I would have thought, which is a model up from the 50

The iP5 still works well for me. Although I am only running iOS7.
You would be advised to turn off the automatic updates and automatic downloads to prevent you getting into the same situation.
As you say your problems seam to have been caused by lack of memory.0 -
The 5 is over four years old. You will be in the exact same position you're in now with the 4 in no time at all.
It may receive this years iOS 10 but even if it does get next years iOS 11 I imagine it will run like treacle.
The OS will continue to get updated as it always does. You could turn off automatic updates but then you will eventually find yourself in a position where when you try to download an app you'll be given an alert saying you can't download that unless you update.
Maybe look at android phones. You can get a lot more for your money. And usually add an SD card for storage.Sigless0 -

That is my fear but the 5s does have double storage to my 4, I was hoping this might be enough to keep it running for the two years.
I don't like android phoneswish I did as they are cheaper and like you say you can add additional memory, might have to re-visit them.

The new iPhone 7 will be out later this year.
If you want to continue having a 2-generation old phone, go ahead and buy the iPhone 5, which will only get slower and slower as time goes on.
If you want to save up more money so you can get the latest one, save save save.0 -

Yes I am more than happy to be 2 generations behind, I don't need the latest version.
As long as it will last two years before I can 'upgrade' to the next 2 generation behind version I will be fine with that.
Its a question if it will last those two years (in a usable condition, slow I could live with, but as said above my 4 no longer even functions as it should).0 -

I'm the same. I like iOS. I prefer it to android.
I'd honestly be looking at at least trying to get a 5s. At this point I'd see buying a 5 (unless it was free) as a waste of money as it won't last you very long. In all honesty I don't see it lasting you two years.
How much is the 5 you're thinking of buying?Sigless0 -

The 5 is currently 3 generations behind and in a few months will be 4.0 -

To be fair, the "C" and "S" range shouldn't count... the differences in design and specs are so tiny, there's no point in that whole range. It's the mis-conception of having the "latest" version, much like car registrations changing twice yearly instead of annual - to encourage sales.0
