Well after cancelling on the 25th, I got a call from Virgin today but was at work so told them to ring me after 1.30pm.

I wonder If they can keep hold of us, will report back.

    Update.

I've just spokento them after them always ringing me at work having told them to ring me in the evening

I agreed £22.25 for 12mths and an increase in speed to 100meg from 70, quite happy with that, saves the hassle of switching provider.

I could maybe have pushed them but went with that.

You could have done, as they offered me the 70MB service and phone for £15 a month for the year on a 12 month contract.

Offer me some reassurance please, fellow hagglers. I've never got as far as getting a termination date before, and I'm panicking!

Was on Big Bang package (M+ TV, Talk Weekends and 150Mbps BB) and after an introductory discount expired and the recent price hikes, was paying just a few pennies short of £60 per month. Rang today to see if they would budge on price, but was told that Customer Relations don't do haggling, so cancelled. All they would do is offer to cut my broadband speed down to 50Mbps and charge me £42 per month, which I said I wasn't interested in, so I was given a termination date. All the time, she kept telling me how I'd never get the same speed/data allowance on Sky or BT.

Are Retentions likely to call back, or should I start hunting for a new provider sharpish?

Im on the same as you an exactly the same mine had gone to just under £60pm.
I called last week and the best they could offer was a £3 a month reduction. Told them id think about it and get back to them.

10 minutes later I called retentions to start the cancellation process. He ran through the options and the best i could get (without cancelling and risking the callback game) was

    M+ TV
    Talk Weekends
    150MB Broadband

    12 month contract
    £38 a month for 6 months then £41 a month for 6 months
£30 credit applied to the account

I was happy with that so accepted

Interestingly it was more expensive (£43 pm i think) just to have broadband on its own

They have always called me and I'm not a big spender plus I do the cancellation haggle every time I get to the end of the contract if I dont get offered a decent deal.

Make sure you know the prices of alternative providers otherwise you wont come across as serious. you can always just phone up and say that you really dont want to leave and just wanted to check whether there was anything they can do.

worse case is you find another deal with someone else or just phone back and cancel the cancellation.
  • I rang them before. My current package is Super Fibre 70, M+ TV and V+ recorder box, talk anytime calls.
This costs me £42.26 (inclusive of £3 a month credit) and rental line saver currently active, expires January 2017. I understand price increase takes effect 1st November.
I asked what discounts could they offer. I was told they could reduce price to £34 - ish, but this was contingent on swapping my V+ box for a Tivo box. I've had this same message a few months ago when the last price increase hit. It irks me somewhat that I have to accept something I don't really want to secure a better deal.
However, I may have to do this eventually because they really seem intent on getting rid of V+ boxes, and I suspect the first time something goes wrong with mine, they'll tell me it's irreparable.
Are Tivo boxes any good? Also Talk Talk seem to be getting a lot of publicity at the moment. Maybe it's time to move to them?

You've done well there, to be honest I just wanted it sorted in the end and thought the upgrade in speed for the money was acceptable for me.

It beats paying what would be over £30 for the 70mb service.

Tivo box is generally OK although ours has gotten pretty slow recently - seems to be a common theme if you search online. Hardware is a lot newer and better spec too.

Talktalk got even more publicity last year when a they had a huge data breach and lots of customers had their details stolen. Hence they are desperately trying to repair the damage with existing customers and trying to temp new ones with good deals.
