Please help, can't get any credit, stable credit score

Hi guys,

First post so go easy on me! Firstly don't know if I have posted this in right place or what but could really do with some advice and help! I am 25 got a good job with good income and according to clear score a 'stable' credit score of 281/700. I have no defaults and my only negative on my report is that I don't have a credit card.

I have never been able to obtain credit since I was around 18 as being young and stupid ended up with a few defaults (mobile phone contract, bank overdraft). However I believe these are now clear from my credit report and having recently got a great job with great income would like to start looking for a mortgage with my fianc!e in around a years time. Hence the reason I am looking to improve my credit score now .

I am really struggling to understand why I cannot get any credit at all? I can't even get a bank account ! Opened a basic current account with Barclays and they closed it after 2 months after doing certain checks? Also applied for a bank with Santander and got rejected as well. I have never been to court regarding debt and have no outstanding debt . I also cannot get car insurance in my name ! It is becoming a joke. It is like my name is blacklisted I honestly don't know where to start and why this is happening. Any time I try and find out why I was rejected I get the usual "we can't disclose this information" nonsense. Can anyone shed any light on what could be causing this situation and if you need me to give any more information regarding my credit score I will do so. Also just to add my fianc!e has no defaults either and applied for a capital one credit card last year in order to boost her credit and got accepted . She never misses a payment so I know it is not her that is bringing my score down . I used mse eligibility calculator to see if I will get accepted for bad credit credit cards and my chances are 0% for a lot of the cards and no higher than 50% for barclaycard.

Please help as I don't know what to do !!

First things first, ignore your credit score. Don't look at it, believe in it or try to improve it.

What is on your credit files (all three)? There appears to be something quite serious on one or all of them.
  • Thanks for your quick reply. There is honestly nothing serious on any of them or nothing I can find? I have done reports with equifax, clear score, experian it shows I have no defaults, no debt , no overdraft, no accounts apart from my joint bank account I have with my fianc!e we opened in 2010. in the accounts section of the credit report the only Bad thing I can find is Lowell portfolio , it says balance £1030 which is from an overdraft in 2008 which defaulted however I'm not sure if this is bad or not as It is not showing as a default . I was under the impression the default would dissapear after 6 years and as it shows 0 defaults I assume it has done this?

Are you on the electoral role, that's a must in verifying your identity and hence being granted credit. Also if you have lots of recent searches may be worth stopping for 6 months to help clean up that aspect of your file.
  • Hi yes I am on the electoral roll. According to clear score I have 6 positives 2 of which are been on electoral roll for a long time, and you have made very few applications for credit in the past year .

    Check CIFAS for any markers.

Also check Call Credit/Noddle - they are the third CRA.
  • I have checked call credit and noodle also sorry forgot to mention that.

    What is cifas?

    Thanks for all your help.

    It's a fraud database.

A CIFAS marker warns banks and other organisations of possible fraud associated with you. You could end up with a CIFAS marker even if it's not your fault, eg if a fraudster tried to use your details to take out credit. That would certainly explain why you can't get even a basic bank account - and why they don't want to talk to you about it. I'm not sure about the other credit agencies, but the Noddle free credit report has a section for CIFAS markers.
  • Ok thanks very much for all your help I will go and do a noddle credit report now and post back with an update . Cheers

If you have a CIFAS marker, it won't show on your credit report. there have been countless threads on here where people have had a CIFAS marker placed against them, and when they checked their credit reports with all 3 - there was no mention of it.

Sounds like this has happened to you OP. If you want to check, you will have to pay £10 and send a subject access request to CIFAS themselves.
