They don't want details for someone else, the want the OP to prove that she is single and claiming correctly as something is flagging up to them that there may be someone living with her.
I'd like to see what evidence they have! Why do I have to prove my innocence. Shouldn't they have to prove my guilt when I've done nothing wrong!!0 -

Its not a question of guilt or innocence you are claiming a benefit (tax credits I presume) for which there are conditions and criteria attached and the HMRC has every right to ensure you are entitled to what you are claiming, if you don't want to meet the conditions or prove you are entitled then don't claim its a simple as that.0 -

Who has to prove what depends on when HMRC do the investigation.
If they do it during the renewals process then the burden of proof is on you.
If they do the investigation mid year under Section 16 of the Tax Credit Act or Section 19 (after the year has ended) then the burden of proof is on them to prove your single claim is wrong..

My sons don't know who she is either. I did actually find a letter I received from a catalogue company refusing credit and her name was May Smith. This was the second letter I'd got. I threw the 1st away thinking it was a 1 off. Do u think if I just sent that in it would be enough?
So there is 'someone' that's associated with your address and possibly explains why HMRC have asked for the information.0 -
Since I started a new job in February I'm not entitled to tax credits so I don't claim any benefits.0

Unfortunately this link could be showing for previous year(s) so they may still want to investigate to see if you have an over payment.
Try not to worry. Just send them the evidence they have requested.0 -
When they look at my bank statements will they be asking me who I've transferred money to? I ask because my parents pay for my food shop on their credit card and I transfer the money to them.0

Well that's easily provable if they should query it.
Don't stress over something that isn't a problem.0 -
I have rung my bank today to ask if they can send out the bank statements for the relevant period they're asking and there's a £10 charge for that which I can't afford. Also I've rung talk talk to ask for the same and they won't send them out, I have to print them off, which I've done and it doesn't show my name, address or anything else. I hope these will be accepted!? My printer is running out of ink and paper and I can't afford to replace them at the moment. This is costly and I've no idea how much it's going to cost to send all this stuff off. Do they reimburse all these costs?0
