HMRC letter

Hi, I've received a letter from the above asking me to send in bank statements, gas, electric, water, phone bill from April 2015 to April 2016, my rent agreement nd any divorce/decri nisi papers. They've mentioned something abt my claim being a single claim nd that there is or could be another adult in the house. There is other adults in my house my 2 sons who are 24 nd 19. Has anybody had any letters like this because I'm not sure what the letter really means and why they need all this info? Thanks

I can't be certain of course, but it would appear that they may think you have a partner living with you. Just provide the information requested and I'm sure it will be sorted.
  • LOTS of people are getting these, easily sorted once proof sent off

If you ring them they will tell you who the other person is and depending on who it is you might not have to send as much paperwork to them.

The other adult living with me was ME! They gave me my maiden name when I rang them so all I needed to send them was my birth certificate to prove this.

I would ring them 1st and find out who the other adult is.

I'm certainly going to do that! I will ring tomorrow as I am at work and don't get home till after 8pm. That is so much info to get together and none of which I've got! I don't understand why they want utility bills?

It could possibly be your 24 year old son. Does the letter not name the other person?

Worth checking with them in case it is. Have you separated from anyone in the last couple of years?

No doesn't mention my son, just says another adult. No haven't had a partner for about 20 years or so!

So if it is my son they're referring to, does that mean I should have done a joint claim when I received tax credits? Because I thought joint claims were for married people?

No - it would not be a joint claim with your son. He is son not partner or husband.

I have just rang the company regarding the letter. Apparently there is somebody call May Smith financially attached to my address. Obviously I'll send all the details that they are asking for. My question now is how can I find out more about this person nd how would I get her removed from my address or whatever she is linked to?

Best thing to do would be to check your credit report. That's generally where HMRC are getting their data.

Get a copy of your Credit Report and see if there is anything on it that 'links' you/your address.
