Good morning.

Did any other Elite read this article and think 52,000 bottles of water and 2,000 cereal bars - is that all? Some of the Elite have close to that as a normal stash :D.

10 Victoria Secrets for £20 .Two different fragrances only certain ones work though.

Good Morning all :) on the upstairs of a double decker bus in the front seat on way to Chester rail station for Liverpool. Reminds me of when I was a kid lol :D

I've tried again this morning but it's not working anymore in fact there seems to be no £5 off £50 for any perfumes even those that state it. Has it stopped working for everyone?

Yes tbw, it sounds to me like you should not have paid tax on your interest.
Here is an article dated JUNE 2015, when they discuss the new £5000 allowance, and how people are baffled about it!
http://http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-3117390/New-rule-lets-claim-5-000-tax-free-allowance-claim.html
I knew from the few comments earlier this week on here, that people on this forum were not aware of the new rules.
They tend to make these announcements in the budget, and because they are not implemented straightaway, people forget about them....that is probably the governments intention!
If I was in your position, I would be contacting HMRC and claiming my money back.

The problem is that, up until this year, I was filling in a self assessment form as I was still doing a bit of MS work. A couple of years ago they stopped letting me claim expenses for the visits and, even though my savings were taxed at the time, my shares were taxed, my pension was taxed and I actually made a paper loss, they still reckoned I owed them money !!! I couldn't understand why but, as it was only a few £s, I paid up just to get them off my back.. Like many people, I had never heard of this possible extra £5000 savings interest - had I realised just how wrong they were I would have fought harder.
As it is I will probably let it go as it seems to only apply to the last year and, with my pension levels, it wouldn't make a massive difference. I am sure that loads of people with slightly smaller incomes will have missed out though.
Now, I have no faith at all that the tax shower will get the workings of this new scheme right.

That new link you have posted explains it all clearly and is certainly worth a good read - I think I'm finally clear about whats going on ! Thank you.

Thanks Juju - that does help my understanding. The main problem I have had is that I had no idea at all that there was a £5000 savings allowance ! With my 2 pensions I know I wS paying tax on a couple of thousand pounds over my personal allowance but I would still have had around £1000 left of the £5000 allowance. All my savings interest was paid after tax and I am now thinking that I should not have paid tax on all of the interest - I didn't claim any back cos I didn't know I could. And I wonder how many others have been caught out.

in theory if you have more than one source of income eg 2 pensions and savings interest then it might have been worth while doing a short assessment tax form each year - I think you might be able to go back ? number of years if you have your end of year statements.
MY OH has a tiny amount of share dividend from inherited shares so we completed a short tax form each year as share dividends only get 10% tax taken off plus there was gift aid on various things like National Trust, Oxfam, ATC, etc
The extra bit of tax he owed was paid by an adjustment in the tax code

we have had letters to say he does not need to do a short tax form now as the dividend is below £1000 - have to see how this works out

I seem to recall you can go back 5/6 years to correct any under or overpayment of tax, so worth checking.

I am thinking that there must be hundreds of thousands in that twilight zone just above £15 k with a state pension, small works pension, tiny bit of dividend and tiny bit of savings interest and because their works pension was taxed they assumed they were tax payers so that meant their savings interest was taxable as well - this would be a good crusade for Martin Lewis to champion - if this £5000 only applies to the previous 2 tax years it would be fairly simple to get statements and to get the tax overpayment refunded ...
