You should keep tabs on things, just because you should.
But if you don't (unless you are earning fortunes) it will all sort itself out eventually. Interest from the bank will be notified to the revenue, who will know what tax you should pay. They will contact you with a refund or a tax code adjustment for an overpayment. Expect it to take months.
this is another thing that puzzles me - some people playing the banks/building societies game might have numerous different accounts and even in this so called digital age it could take months for all of them to inform HMRC what interest everybody has had. HMRC have then to collate all of this info and write to x hundred thousand people to say you earned £x amount of interest but £x is over your allowance please fill in this self tax assessment form if you don't already do one.
will they give a detailed breakdown of what interest you have earned from where and between what dates so you can make sure its correct?
some of my savings accounts pay interest in September and 2 are in December so how is this calculated for a tax year running April to April ???
I cant even remember the last time the tax man sent me a code“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -

we're holding one of brexit's losers at the moment.
they have recovered a little but not to the value if we had sold on 22nd June.

2008 - 8 years ago we were financially supporting eldest child through uni and she was bankrupting us, middle child was at sixth form and struggling and we were supporting him as he was still at home and youngest child was struggling through his GCSEs educationally but still managed to get into college - I have no idea whatsoever how we got through in one piece.
I think that was rock bottom year but in 2009 I started keeping excel charts and finally we started saving ...

No offense taken - it has make me realise how we really have turned our lives around - and how bleak things were back then ...
