LEJC, if you need to have a sad day or a duvet day or whatever kind of day suits you, then do it. Sometimes I think it's better to have a chance to give into it, accept it and then move forwards, rather than carry on forcing ourselves to pretend.

Enterprise, I'm after some advice please. Our phone line won't work, and possibly hasn't since we switched from talk talk to plus net a few months ago (I assumed people had just stopped calling :o)

We have fibre broadband but no dialling tone and can't make or receive calls. I've replaced the handset but no joy so I'm guessing it's the line. Is there anything simple to try, before spending money on getting someone out?

Is your main socket where the line comes in a split socket, you look at the faceplate and there is a line horizontally across the middle? If so, unscrew the two screws on the bottom half and VERY CAREFULLY pull it out. Behind it you will find the test socket. Plug your phone in there and if you are still not getting a dial tone it is a line fault. Call your supplier and tell them you have tried a phone in the test socket and you don't get a dial tone.

If you do get a dial tone in the test socket then it is an internal cabling fault (or it could be the faceplate but less likely) in which case it will be cheaper to find an independant Telecoms engineer.

Not far at all. About a five-minute cab ride away. There is a taxi rank there but it isn't a very busy station so may not be taxis there all the time. They probably only meet the London trains. There is a taxi phone at the station I think but I can recommend Hedge End cabs if you want to book one in advance. 01489 788955 (They may even be the ones at the station!)

On the map it looks like one of those annoying places which across the fields is a very short distance but via the roads its ages - you might have to book a taxi if it does not have a regular taxi rank outside the station
