I tried to return a costa coffee set (glasses and cups and some coffee and syrup) to Debenhams with a gift receipt. They refused saying it was food and couldn't be refunded. But most of the gift isn't food and the donor clearly meant for it to be returned as they enclosed the gift receipt. The girl said there was a sign up saying food can't be taken back and the till will issue a gift receipt for anything requested.

Any ideas? £31.50 value, that could be better spent.

Is it just me or did anyone else not realise that the words on the M&S loo roll all start with M&S - was reading it yesterday :rotfl::rotfl:

Hope everyone doing frugal January is off to a good start. I'm kind of doing it, but rather than than setting myself a £ target, I'm aiming to spend as little as possible and focus instead on using up what we have. Some of the weird and wonderful stuff in our cupboards has been there for far too long. Also doing dry January as of yesterday.
I've been doing the final reckonings for last year's grocery spend and we've come in at an average of £73.04 per month. I'm very pleased with this as it includes our annual purchase of half a lamb and rather too much wine.
For comparison, 2013 was £91.87 and it's gone down each year since then, although I think I'll struggle to get it much lower now.

    Well done HG,

We're off to a good start, so far only bought parsnips. Like you we haven't set a limit for food but intend to only buy fresh food items, veg and milk etc and eat out of freezer and cupboard.

As for other spending, that's already sky high as my laptop finally gave up just before Christmas so a new one on the way :j:j

We're going dry in Feb as we have 4 birthdays this month, so no chance (also Feb is shorter :D).

    Happy shopping or NSD.
Mortgage debt 45,000. Thank you all for your help so far in helping me save to buy the house. I could not have done this without all your help.

I personally would email CS and ask why they give the impression that it could be returned by providing a gift receipt (that is purely for return if mind changed) if it cannot be returned. Say that if that was not the case then surely the gift receipt should not have been provided, and refusal of a gift receipt would have given purchaser the ability to change their mind and buy something else.

    Good morning all....

I've been lurking a little more than perhaps I should recently...but new year, new start and back in the saddle so to speak!

I'll declare my intentions on frugal Jan being back into a £40 spend for the 2 of us and see where that takes us....plenty in the freezer at the moment but we are starting to run low on basics so a top up will be needed possibly later today.
I also have a few expiring APG's to use so can hopefully supplement spending cash with those.....some nectar points and CC points which I am unsure what to do with as yet so I might just drag them forward to next years christmas spend.

I'm going to have a go at dry January of sorts and limit myself to one glass every other day....thus hopefully making it more of a slow trickle rather than dry....

hope everyone is well and that 2017 brings us some joy x
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend
