Can anyone help with whether the chilled Quorn can be frozen? I've bought some this afternoon and they are the 350g versions (that's how I knew they were the chilled ones!). They are a little bit much for us to consume all in one go. We usually have the 300g frozen and dip out of them time and again, keeping them in the freezer. They make several meals.
The chilled versions say Consume within 24 hours once opened:(. It's no good that I don't want some on consecutive days. I've had to open a pack, in order to use some for tonight. I've got quite a lot leftover, so I have put that into the freezer (don't know if I should have done but it's been there for a while now). I notice Quorn's website (I have searched around the web but not got the answer to my question) says that products that are bought not frozen can be frozen after cooking (my emphasis). They can then be kept for up to 3 days in the freezer.
However, what about uncooked Quorn? Is that 'safe' to freeze, as I have? It says after cooking on the website - is that just a ploy by them to get them to be cooked and then reduce their lifespan to 3 days so we have to buy more and more of them again? Or can the uncooked ones be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months, like unopened ones can be put into the freezer (it says 'on day of purchase' but I see no reason for that as the product could have remained in the supermarket, on its shelves, for a further three weeks until its use-by and would still have been freezable on whatever day it was purchased)? Unopened packs would clearly be uncooked as you wouldn't cook in the packet - so clearly they can be frozen without cooking them first. Unopened packs can be put into the freezer for three months and, clearly, the product being frozen would be uncooked. I've had to open the pack in order to consume some of it (there is no way I could consume anything ever at all without opening it) - now I want to extend the 24 hours, putting them into the freezer but should I have to cook them first? Why can't they be put into the freezer uncooked just like the unopened packets can? How does the three weeks (they have long use by - 29 December) go down to just three days after cooking them - why would I want to cook them only to shorten their life? I get that I have opened them so now have 24 hours:( but doesn't freezing them now extend that?
In short, is freezing the opened, chilled uncooked product able to extend beyond 24 hours? Frozen versions can just be left in the freezer and taken out of within 3 days of opening - is there any reason why freezing the uncooked chilled product cannot be done and why Quorn appears to insist it can be frozen only after cooking?
http://www.quorn.com/safe-storage/
I know they 'know about their own product' and there must be a reason for their advice, but they are a business too and sometimes is in not in their interest to give us advice that makes us have to buy the product again later rather than consume it in the most efficient manner?
Relevant extract:
Five tips for safe storage
"Freezing leftovers– If you are cooking frozen Quorn products, you should not refreeze it again after cooking. Just pop it into an air-tight container in the fridge and it will be fine for up to three days. Quorn products that weren’t frozen when purchased can be stored in the freezer after cooking." [appears to imply that they cannot be stored in the freezer unless they have been cooked first, yet they must be able to be put into the freezer, without cooking, if they have not been opened - you could not cook them in the package itself - in order to get the 3 months date. If not, you would have to open them, in order to cook them, and then would be down to the 24 hours unfrozen date which can then be extended only to 3 days and not the 3 months at all - so, in order to get the 3 months frozen, as claimed on the packet, you must be able to put them uncooked into the freezer without cooking them as they have been unopened. Now, I have opened mine, in order to cook and eat some - why do I have to cook the rest first? I do not have to cook the unopened packet that can be frozen for up to 3 months despite their "after cooking" mention so, surely, the "after cooking" is also not required in respect of opened produce.]
Am I being confusing?
I suspect this problem arises because I am reading them literally. It says they "can" (in order words are "able to") be stored in the freezer after cooking. However, it does not say that they cannot be stored in the freezer without cooking. It is silent on that matter - so, what am I to do?!? They "can" be stored in the freezer after cooking, it says (in other words - I don't have to - I could have stored them in the fridge albeit have 24 hours to consume). But - can they be stored in the freezer after not cooking them at all?0
