Yes 10 or 20p difference depending on which way they drive, not £££ difference because they thought up a price on the whim.

You may not have had it happen to you but from personal experience I can assure you that different drivers from the same minicab firm can charge totally differing amounts for exactly the same journey.
On one regular trip I take, the fare can be anywhere between £12 (which is what most firms charge for the journey) and £9 and this is for trips that I always take at about the same time in the evening on Fridays or Saturdays.

All drivers that are driving for the same private hire company all use the same meters/devices/apps. It wouldn't be very good if you got one driver one day and got charged X then did the same journey the next day with a different driver and got charged Y because he plucked the price out of his head.

Most PH drivers are effectively self employed and the PH firm acts as a franchisor. Would it not therefore be illegal (under the Competition Act) for them to conspire with their fellow drivers and/or the hire company to fix fares?

No because they are all trading under the same company name.

It doesn't matter. So far as the law is concerned they're separate businesses.

This is why you see "price and participation may very" in this ad http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/promotions.html

Mcdonalds cannot dictate prices to its franchisees.

If you've jumped in one in the past that has plied for trade you wre uninsured.

As a passenger in such a vehicle, you would not be uninsured.

That's a scare story put around by Black Cabs and TFL etc
