They said that they have been driving a taxi since April. The 5 week period is the time that they think they were infringing on the bus lanes.

No he has been driving a Private Hire vehicle. All PH drivers know the difference. The LTDA and UCG remind everybody of the differences daily.

    Yep.

You don't drive a TAXI you drive a private hire vehicle. They are not allowed in Bus Lanes (in most regions)

PH taxis around here have meters just the same as the taxis that are allowed to pick up passengers off the street. How else would they work out how much to charge?

In my area PH charge less than taxis but the taxis aren't black cabs. They are just normal saloon/estate cars the same as the PH use.

I've never seen a PH car anywhere with a taximeter. They either quote a fare in advance or use their odometer.

The OP has already stated they are not Uber which shows they have some knowledge of the PH trade in London.

    I smell BS I'm afraid.

I've heard that Uber are everywhere now, not just London. Everybody's heard of Uber...Not in a good way.

All PH taxis I've been in have had a screen showing how much the fare started at and how much the fare is currently at during the journey. Even if it's a sat nav look-a-like device or an iPhone app. You can get set fares but you have to ask for them when you book.

Folk only diss Uber because it's fashionable to do so. I can get a Uber home from a night out dropping someone else off out the way and it still costing less than a rank taxi or PH.

If they use ranks they aren't PH, they're taxis (hackney carriages).

How do you suppose PH cars managed before they had smartphones or satnav?

What? They had old fashioned LED displays like the display on my old JVC VCR.
