It doesn't make that much difference how much notice you give as the deferral process starts from either the date you claim your State Pension from or the date you made the claim, whichever is later. .........................

    Thanks, really simple then!

I am sure the post from WOLV was very informative but it was hard to read....so am I right in thinking you can never get the full amount from the start?
So how much notice do they need to make the first normal payment?

I am more confused than ever now and have a headache!!

+1 You would think that by giving notice you would be able to get the full amount from the start, seems to be a crazy system. As they can give you an accurate forecast months in advance it should be easy.
Has anybody had a positive experience on this?

The point seems to be that you need to have received and acted on the Choices letter before you can get either the increased weekly state pension or the lump sum?

You ring and claim your pension and give the date from which you wish it to start.

The Pension Service has at least fifteen working days from the later of these to send out the Choices letter.

It would seem likely therefore that you will have started receiving your state pension some weeks before you get the opportunity of choosing an enhanced weekly pension or the lump sum.

Once you have received the Choices letter, you can either send back the form with choice noted or advise your choice by phone - if you are taking the lump sum option you need to state whether you want to take it in the current or next tax year.

It will take the Pension Service at least another fifteen working days to calculate and pay either the lump sum or the enhanced weekly payment.

All in all, you will wait at least two months ( but under current circumstances it could well be more) from date of claim/date of receipt of first payment before receiving the lump sum or the enhanced state pension.

    I think......

Apologies, I was in a bit of a rush but yeah thats more or less the jist.

Also on a separate note, if anyone was thinking to do their claim online or via a claim form, don't bother unless you don't want your claim done on time. Claim via the phone if possible.

    more or less the jist.

"Gist" from Latin "iacere" via Old French "gesir" meaning "to lie" - in the sense of "Where the truth or heart of the matter resides..." - thought I'd add that on B-Day ..or is it B+1 Day.....:)

Then it appears that I must have been lucky with my recent online-submitted claim with replies made by post - it's all been completed within two months of the start date I requested, even allowing for an almost two-week delay caused by my not posting back my 'Choices' response immediately!

    The chronology for my claim:

    - Online claim submitted 6-April (after many weeks of deferral).
    - Requested pension start date: 27-April.
    - 'Award Notice and Statement' for pension received 6-May but only for basic SP and GRB; just a simple "we will write to you separately" about extra pension for deferment, but at least the entitlement was acknowledged.
    - First payment made on time at the end of May (four weeks of pension paid in arrears).
    - Deferment 'Choices' letter received on 2-June (one week after the first payment; five weeks after the pension start date).
    - I posted back my choice for extra pension on 12-June.
    - Revised Statement of Pension including the extra pension for deferment was received on 23-June and today the back payment for the eight weeks of extra pension was credited to my bank account.

My only grumble was the 'Choices' letter just gave a single figure for the extra pension entitlement with no calculation; not until the revised statement did I get a split between the extra pension for deferment of the basic SP and GRB (fortunately the numbers matched my calculation to the nearest penny).

As you say, you may have been more fortunate than most - for my own part, despite horror stories concerning contacting HMRC by phone at any other time than 7.45 in the morning, on two afternoons this week, I was through to them and query dealt with within ten minutes on each occasion.... you win some, you lose some..:)

Thanks for that. Was your tax code adjusted from the date you wished to start the pension and was it to take into account just the SP or SP+deferral value, or even in 2 stages?
