How long before I receive deferred SP?

Options
I claimed my SP on 4 May; all being paid - no problem. :)

At that time I was told I would receive a letter within 15 working days detailing the amount of deferred pension and setting my options as to how to take it. The fifteen days is now well past and I have yet to receive any communication. I've phoned DWP three times and have received the same answer: "There's a backlog in 'your area', but we'll send them an email on your behalf." All very polite, but nothing seems to be happening. :(

Please can someone tell me if this delay is normal and if not, to whom should I be complaining?

Thank you for the information, I thought it would be paid at the time of claiming.

Thank you for the links. I spoke to someone from another DWP office and (very long story short) should have a letter by 24 June. We'll see.

I helped with the forms, to claim state pension for father in law. He'd deferred for about 15 years. Took them about eight weeks to respond, and that was just to query the claim date. Signed and returned the new letter last week. No idea, and it wasn't mentioned in the letter, about when payment will begin, or back pay paid.

I thought you could claim SP over the telephone and it was paid pretty much immediately.

It does, but the deferral part has to go to a specialist team to get the calculation done

I didn't know that, but now I am alarmed!

Are you suggesting that this simple calculation is done by a human rather than a computer?

They possibly use computer to work out payment, but humans are involved. ;)

You would be truly surprised at how many "simple" calculations are done by offline by the clerks (this doesn't just apply to public sector).

Computer systems first designed in the 80s and early 90s on mainframes were not used for "simple" calculations so these days spreadsheets tend to be used.

A spreadsheet developed by "the lad in the corner" is deemed to be "free" while amendment the core mainframe system to do it is deemed to be "too expensive".

I am so old, I remember when they upgraded the 360 from 8k to 16k and we all wondered what we'd do with all that extra power! And when the first 10mb hard drive replaced the floppy, and we all wondered what anyone would use 10mb of storage for! :D
