Very old Halifax mortgage with PPI

Between 4th April 1996 and 1st February 2001 I had my first ever mortgage with the Halifax and also some sort of PPI, payable through loss of income, but I can't remember what it was called at that time, although it formed part of my overall mortgage payments.
Due to the lack of information I had, I instructed a PPI claims company to act on my behalf, who contacted the Halifax and were advised that I didn't have any PPI.
So I wrote to the Halifax directly, asking them for my mortgage account number, transaction list, and details of the mortgage and insurance/payment protection policy taken out alongside my mortgage. They responded by saying that all account information about me was no longer held and therefore they couldn't provide the information requested.
Does anyone know where do I stand with this please, as I really wanted to make a claim?

If you no longer have the policy then you can no longer make a claim. However, I suspect you mean complain.
Are you sure it was PPI? in 1996, if it was single premium but added to mortgage then it would be Mortgage Indemnity Guarantee (MIG). if it was monthly premium then it could be life assurance. Neither are PPI.

Halifax never had any sort of PPI that was part of the mortgage payment
Perhaps you had TMPP (Total Mortgage Protection Plan) where you could choose a number of elements such as life insurance, critical illness cover, MPPI, etc) But this was paid separately to the mortgage payment.
As you don't really know what you had, how can you know it was mis-sold?
As you don't know what you had and the Halifax have no records (after all, it's 15 years ago) I think this is a non starterEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Yes, it was MPPI, but it was definitely paid with the monthly mortgage payment.
Without going into detail, the reason I believe it was mis-sold are job related. I was young and naive and it was my first ever mortgage.
Whatever the case, I was curious to understand whether the is a time limit, as in so many years back that one can make a mis-sold case?0 -
You need evidence to show you paid it. If you have none and they have none, you have nothing to complain about.
The only thing left for you is to send a SAR and £10 to them to see what's left. However, they are within their rights to have deleted your info, and you yourself have kept none. If the MPPI didn't come from Halifax but a broker, then you are out of luck, as most brokers weren't regulated.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
If you are determined to make a complaint you really need to locate the mortgage account number. Send a SAR and see what it produces. Failing that you might be able to obtain it through applying to Land Registry and requesting a Charge document. This would cost around £70

You have asserted that you had PPI on your mortgage and that it was missold.
As you have made the assertion, it is for you to prove it is more likely than not (and not merely equally likely) to be true. This is a long established legal principle.
HBOS says it holds no evidence that such a policy ever existed. If you think it did then you will need to produce evidence in some other way.
You can submit a Data Subject Access Request to HBOS. However, it is only required to produce data that it can reasonably find based on the information you give it. There is no requirement to go through all of its archives just in case.
So if the archive is held in order of account number only, if you do not provide the account number then it is unlikely to produce any evidence.
Even if you were to find such evidence, you would still need to show that the product was unsuitable for you and that Halifax was at fault.
So you seem to be a long way from winning any redress.0 -
Not sure how much this helps, but I put in a mis-selling PPI complaint against Halifax a few months ago for a mortgage I held from 1998 until I switched lenders in about 2002.
Fortunately I did have the account number, but wasn't too sure if I had PPI or not. It turns out that I did as they called me and I had went through a telephone questionnaire. They upheld my complaint and gave me the money back.0 -
I too had the same problem. Please write to them at Halifax DSAR, Charlton Place (C42), Andover, Hants SP10 1RE quoting your full name, date of birth and all addresses that the Halifax would have had dealings with. Enclose a cheque for £10.00 and the dates you require the information for. It take a while to come back but you will get all the information you require. Their direct line no. is 01264 34 66 050
