Home move cancellation fees

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if I could ask for some help/advice.
I signed an 18 month fibre internet contract (up to 38Mb, £24.45 a month with EE) when I moved into a flat in February. But in May there was a terrible rat infestation and was forced to move out. I am now moving into someone's spare room but they already have internet and can't cancel theirs for 6 months. My contract was an 18 month one (I did not envisage any of this happening as I'm sure you can imagine) so to cancel it, the fee is £260!! I called EE and they said I could transfer the contract to someone else, but I don't know anyone who needs internet.
What should I do? I have had to put all my things into storage so have had lots of unexpected costs and I can't spend another £260 to cancel the internet.... any words of advice?
Much appreciated, thank you for reading0 -

As Browntoa says, contractually, you're stuck. But maybe you can sweet talk someone at EE into helping you out due to unforseen circumstances - you'll need to rely on charm rather than any rules...0

Won't it be cheaper to pay cancellation fees on the contract that only has 6 months to run?0

Hi. I have decided that I no longer want Plus TV from Talk Talk - mainly because it offered some Sky channels when I signed up. However, I found out when I was connected that I couldn't access them because my internet speed is too slow. So I am paying over the odds each month just to get Freeview.
I have 12 months left on my contract and according to Talk Talk if I want to cancel I must pay £22.97 for every month I have left on my contract which works out at an extortionate £275.64!!
How can I get out of this contract...??0 -
Hope for a price increase which should give you a get of of contract free option0

I'm sure it won't be long coming. I think the last increase was from 1/10/15 so there should be an announcement in the next month for 2016 (Plusnet has just announced its increases from 1/9/16).0 -

Are you saying that you cannot get ANY Catch-up services at all?
Are you paying for Sky services that you cannot receive?
And Talktalk provide your broadband?
If it is Talktalk's responsibility to provide Broadband such that you can receive other services that you are also paying them for, then you have good grounds on which to either cancel the contract without further charge or get free or reduced cost remedy i.e. Fibre BB.
How did the situation arise? Did it ever work properly? Why didn't you complain at the outset?
I had a similar situation after moving house to an area with poor BB speeds. After failing to get frontline call centre staff to grasp the situation, I spoke first to a call centre supervisor and then to the UK-based retention team in order to sort the situation out to my satisfaction.
The Youview box is a significant part of the cost of Talktalk's TV services in the first few months, so you may need to offer to return it.0 -
If the broadband coverage at your address is insufficient to receive all the services advertised and there is no fibre network serving your area with which to rectify this (for which you would be charged over and above what you are already paying) then TT have no obligation to provide sufficient bandwidth to access the Sky channels because they can't! If you are in the desert, metaphorically speaking, and you cannot find water, you die of thirst. It is not the provider's problem.
If you want to check your broadband speeds, there are plenty of free online checkers with which to do so. If you want to find out whether there is fibre (fibre optic cable) to your area, you could try https://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
If it does not work, just search for broadband availability and use a different checker. You could try other providers' websites to see if they serve your area. V1rg1n use different technology (or did, imagine this is still true of many areas) so you may find they can provide better bandwidth, though, if there is no other fibre to your area, I would think this unlikely, but worth a try.
If you want to leave without penalties, you could either wait until TT vary the terms and condtions, most likely with a price rise (I hope they don't, I'm with 'em) or you could raise a complaint and wait 8 weeks. If the complaint is legitimate and they cannot resolve it, I believe you can leave without penalties after this time but am not certain. Check the T's & C's on their website. HTH0 -
We were the same although we had fibre from TT it was never fast enough to provide a clear and unbroken service. At the time we signed I still had 3 months left of our sky contract so just let it run thinking I could cancel it if the TT was not up to scratch and thank God I didn't.
The youview box is in our spare living room so never used and I got a computer says no response from TT when I rang up to complain.
