Can these current accounts be opened entirely online without visiting a branch?

I have had a current account with the same bank since I was a child. The account pays zero interest and I would like to switch. Can Tesco, Lloyds, TSB and Nationwide current accounts be opened online or do they require you to visit a branch to open the account?

  • Tesco can be opened fully online, you have to send back a signed form to them.
Tsb could be a mixed bag, I opened fully online but my friend had to go to branch to provide id.
Nationwide same as tesco you need to send a signed form back to them.
With lloyds I have no experience.

They all can. Occasionally one will ask for physical ID documents, sometimes provided in branch. Tesco, of course, don't have any branches.
  • I never signed paperwork for Nationwide, Halifax or TSB - everything done online.

I have opened accounts recently with all 4 you mentioned - never had to visit a branch for any of them.

I think the only times you would be required to go into a branch is if your ID cannot be electronically identified.

It's a very long time since I opened a TSB current account and I can't remember whether they give you the sort code and account number straight away at the end of a successful application or whether you have to wait to get it through the snail mail. Can anyone else remember please? It's a normal Classic account I am interested in, not the Plus.

I applied for one about a week ago. I didn't get the sort code and acct no, and no email confirmation either. There was just a message saying they'd write to me in the next 3-4 days, which I am still waiting for. I can see the new account online now but I am waiting for my debit card and PIN before I start using it.

Concur with Colsten. My TSB classic accounts appear in my login instantly with a paper confirmation in approx. a week. If you apply whilst logged in expect a phone call to confirm the details they hold for you are still current .

The first 3 accounts were all done online, Tesco needed a form signed and posted and I'm sure my NW account was online.

You might be asked to go into branch with ID or whatever.
