The lower 5mb speeds tend to be in places that are oversubscribed.
I thought it was only to do with distance from the cabinet. Presumably over subscription is also a factor.kwikbreaks wrote: »Possibly he won't because with a half mile to cab the promise wouldn't have been very high at all...0 -
TalkTalk FibreThanks very much for the graph Terry. That really has me thinking.
I'm about 3km from the exchange as the crow flys
I wish I had seen that a few months ago :wall:0 -
I thought it was only to do with distance from the cabinet. Presumably over subscription is also a factor.
Distance from Cabinet is more of an issue for Broadband (ADSL) because it is copper
With copper they were using existing wiring for telephones.
For fibre there is dedicated cabling to those green boxes and for some households additional fibre to the door.
Ask your neighbour to do a speedtest.net and ask which provider they use.
All connections from homes to exchange go to a switch or switch router which then takes it up to a bigger pipe, think B roads, A roads and Motorways
So if say in an area they have 256 ports and 300 subscribers, if there isn't proper kit they will put temp solutions in that share the ports until they have enough customers to justify new kit. This happens all the way up the infrastructure.
In villages where ADSL is dire the fibre is often over subscribed.
There are other potential factors but sites like SAMKNOWS have information about your specific exchange. Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0 -
TalkTalk FibreYes I have been on Sam knows to find the distance.
VSDL is fibre (openreach) isn't it ?
I'm confused with the graph because its the distance from the cabinet which should matter with FTC0 -

TalkTalk FibreIs states for VSDL Low 73 and 61.9
SSE quoted 61.90 -
We were due to join SSE 76Mb Ultra Fibre & Calls for £21 a month from TalkTalk (we have the standard Simply Broadband and No Calls for £17.70 a month) on June 27 but I was a bit nervous about leaving given what I've read about Traffic Management and the slow speeds some people encounter in the evening.
I spoke to TalkTalk and they offered us 76Mb Fibre Large for 12 months at £17.70 a month (but no inclusive calls which we didn't need anyway) on a new 18 month contract and free connection, the standard price after 12 months is £32.70 a month.
We decided to stay, despite their rotten CS our phone and broadband services with TalkTalk have been, surprisingly, consistently good.0 -
OtherPlease don't touch SSE, me and many others are having very bad speeds in the evening, a 1gb file takes over an hour to download0

TalkTalk FibreWell I chickened out and went on virgin medias basic package which was only a few quid more.
50Mb
50Gb download per month.
As much as I hate them it seamed silly to have a decent connection and then try and use openreaches copper.
This basic package hopefully will suit me.
£6 month for the first 12months
And then £14. Plus line rental of course0
