I second the afternoon tea idea, my mother had one for her 85th and loved it. Only trouble now is that at 88 years old a lot of those at the first 'party' are now gone.

Flowers every month for a year is also a great idea and needn't be too expensive, especially as you're considering a beauty treatment a month.

My mother has nothing she wants any more and is actively disposing of her goods so giving her anything to keep would just annoy her!

    Good luck in your search.

My 96 year old aunt was very excited to get a framed copy of her parents and grandparents birth certificates (from the well known genealogy site). She had never seen them before and was astonished that they were "on that web thingy" ! She has since been really interested in finding out more and corners anyone with a "computer thingy" to find out more.

An experience day - a parachute jump, perhaps?

I guess a military parade and flypast is a little tricky to organise ...

Naah, that's old hat. Once you've seen one you've seen 'em all!

Thank you to everyone for the ideas. You're such a creative lot, my mind was blank before but now it's buzzing with variations on the themes you've suggested. I wonder what the Queen received from her family and closest friends? I think she's done the parachute jump before!

Thank you very much one and all.

If she loves cinema and goes often to see new films would something like an unlimited cinema monthly pass be suitable? Odeon do one for around £18/month.

Next birthday or maybe Xmas, when I am asked "what do you want for a prezzie" it is definitely going to be an expensive, quality bottle of Cognac. Something that I would never dream of buying for myself but would absolutely drool over if it was given as a present.

Music.. My mum loves music and singing. For her 90th we had a party and arranged for a guy to play his accordian. She loved it.

I bought my aunt a newspaper for the day she was born. It was a paper for the city where she was born and she loved looking at it, she particularly loved the adverts for shops that are long gone and checking what prices were like. I also made her a calendar with family photos but it made her cry, I think she liked it really.

I am trying to convince my family that Amazon vouchers are the best present. I am a bit tired of the "wacky" or "interesting" gift ideas. I love having a nice healthy balance on my Amazon account and can indulge myself with lots of books, the real kind and kindle.

Digital photo frame? Then get all her old photos scanned and onto it so she can enjoy them again and/or share them (as they'd be digitised) .... you can add photos of your holiday to it as well.
