As subject line really. Nothing along the lines of rug for lap, cosy slippers etc. She's not that kind of person. New pair of stout walking boots, pickup stick and pack of bin liners is more her line, for picking up litter on her daily walks.

Loves to read, travel, daydream, chat with friends in coffee houses, mooch around interesting shops/new towns, watch the horizon, have serious discussions about life, the universe and everything. Has everything financially she could want. Am accompanying her on a little holiday but would like something that's a surprise to present at her party.

No patience with computers, talking books, dvds, cds but loves the cinema.

Off the wall ideas, as well as sensible ones, gratefully received. Happy either to buy something individually or club together with others.

If you are 90+, what did you most enjoy receiving for your birthday.

Thanks

DS

Does she like flowers - perhaps a nice vase with the promise to fill it once a month ??

Maybe some of your time would be more useful to her ? - a promise to carry out tasks around the home she can no longer do ..

Or as you say she likes coffee shops - mix of above to have coffee date every week two weeks for x number of times etc.

Thank you. I'd love to be able to give her more time, I think that would be something she'd definitely appreciate, however I live 200 miles away and although I do my best, it's tricky.

I love the flowers idea though. However it might bankrupt me as I'll probably end up buying them for at least another 10+ years at this rate. I'm going to think up a variation on this theme though, it's a good one.

We bought her a massage a few years ago, she fell asleep and missed most of it. Might buy her a different beauty treatment, feet maybe.

Maybe a treatment a month until next birthday? Combining these two ideas into one! Thanks for great ideas - any more?

I did a "when I am old I shall wear purple" box for grandparent. I did a calligraphy copy of the poem and items mentioned in it - small bottle of whisky, purple satin socks, that sort of thing.
She loved it because it made her laugh and it was a talking point with all her friends.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

An afternoon tea voucher for two somewhere like the Linthwaite hotel in the Lakes or somewhere closer to home if that is too far away. You could throw in a chauffered car for her and whoever she chooses to take (if it isn't you!)

A framed picture of somewhere important to her; favourite place, hotel she loved, place with memories attached.

Vouchers for the services of a local handyman/cleaner.

A trip to somewhere she often speaks about but hasn't revisited.

Does she like to learn new things? Maybe a day course to learn pottery, or if she's really keen on cinema maybe there's a weekend course to make your own film :) You could present her with a digital camcorder to get her started.

How about a pot plant or something for the garden if she has one? Add an attractive container and it becomes quite a substantial present.
    somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's

I guess a military parade and flypast is a little tricky to organise ...
