I also suffer greatly from slugs. and now this year. from large snails in shells. I bought that stuff that looks like cat litter(snail granules?) and made rings of it around my newly planted stuff and it seems to have worked so far. I dont know what it is made from, nothing on the box or online. It says pet and child safe.

I bought some of that stuff - it killed numerous plants and just turned into a disgusting sludge the moment it rained. Had to dig it all out and chuck it. I'd rather put up with the slugs!! I find the slugs love primroses, they turned a large feature tub full of pansies from flowers to stalks in the space of about 48 hours, and slaughtered my sunflowers. Other plants have less interference from them. But I also have a lot of pots, which they love sheltering under. I tend to take them to the end of the garden and teach them to fly.

Sounds like you need a hedgehog. Some years ago I was plagued with slugs, coming home at midnight after a hard day at work I had to walk down my path which was covered with the blighters. Then they seemed to vanish, at the same time a hedgehog moved in. Had to say it was one very fat hog!
BTW am not a gardener just loathe slugs and snails.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I have a hedgehog house but as yet, nothing living in it. Difficult to entice them with food due to the number of cats in the area so I'm relying on them finding their own way!

I've just seen an ad for sarracenia pupurea which allegedly eats slugs. Anyone tried it?

Spotted slugs in my garden yesterday during daylight hours
So soon :( it's not even March yet
  • Stopping by to answer a question and ask another.

Slugs can climb very high, ours get up to the top lintels of the first floor windows, nights when we return after dark there can be as many as a dozen on the front of our cottage. This causes a peculiar problem - if we leave windows open, or on the vent setting (open about a half inch, but secured) then we get "visitors".
Does anyone else have this problem? They are definitely coming in only when windows are open, but they do travel a long way once in, the spare room carpet was like a sluggy race track!

  • Apparently they can't handle caffeine, so getting spent coffee grounds from a local coffee shop to spread around the plants would be a good idea.

I've been buying organic slug pellets from Asda for a couple of years now and my slug (and snail) population is definitely reduced. They are pet friendly and suitable for organic gardening. I can't remember what's in them (they're down the garden in the shed and it's dark, sorry!) but whatever it is makes them lose their appetite so they just stop eating and eventually die.
