I have frogs but I think they must be vegetarian because I also have gazillions of both slugs and snails :(

Just had to knock a huge slug off the door handle of my conservatory before I could get back in the house, I used a stick to knock it off but it wasn't strong enough to depress the door handle so I had to use my hand - then scrubbed it red raw - eww!

    i just feed them bread,

read if you kill them, they will re-populate in no time (believe this), and it's a yucky job so i don't bother.

just put bread down as they seem to prefer it to plants.

...bit annoying, but best way i have found is trying to "appease" them as opposed to getting rid... because that is not going to happen.

also though, some slugs eat other slugs, so you could also reference the different types and only kill specific ones ...start a war amongst their own ranks ?

...don't think you will be stopping them though... the army is too vast.

Not white socks, but blue ones :( I have no idea what's in a slug but the goo never, ever comes off - the socks ended up in the bin as scrubbing, hot water, cold water, soap, and soda crystals had no effect.
  • Dried dog food seems to have the same effect as the kitten food - if I leave our pooches bowl outside its swarming with slugs by late evening...

There is a brook near our house and I regularly find frogs in the garden - and a lot of empty snail shells. My Mum put a small pond in her garden a couple years ago and gets a lot of frogs and reckons the slug population has plummeted since the frogs moved in.

I find hunting under pots and nooks and crannies during the day is a good way to deal with them - nab them while they are snoozing and dump in a bowl of salt water I keep behind the shed.

I have often though that if anyone bred mutant slugs and and produced a slug that loves dandelion and bindweed - they would be a millionaire!

Next question - do cats eat dried dog food?

That might be worth a shot if the "furry marauder" didnt promptly decide it had been put out for them...

Not if the dog is eating it at the same time. ;)

I imagine the larger dog biscuits that I used to eat as a child would not attract cats due to their size. I think there's a fair amount of wheat bran in them, which is what a slug finds attractive in slug pellets.

I suspect if I was putting bread or cat food out I'd be worrying more about rats than slugs.

I also have loads of slugs in my garden. I'm trying to get the garden fixed up and looking nice with lots of lovely plants but I'm worried anything I plant will get eaten.

What is the issue with using slug pellets? I read something about how they are dangerous for cats. My neighbours have cats and although they never seem to come near my garden, I wouldn't want to risk harming them or some other feral cat. Are the Eco friendly slug pellets safe?

I'd prefer snails to slugs. At least they're easy to pick up, with their shell.
  • I once lived next door to a very nasty man and he loved collecting slugs so I happily obliged. Then one day I was lucky enough to discover a huge haul of eggs under some old wet carpet, tiny round white ones. After dispatching these my garden's slug population had greatly reduced.
