How to find IF cancelled policy is on record?

Hi all,

My car insurance was up for renewal last month & I paid via online once I found cheapest quote

However, it was paid using my dad's debit card therefore they required me to ring in with him to confirm (payment was taken online) before call

So when I called in with him, they advised me
that I failed their "enrichment check" which is like a credit check. And will refund the debited amount

I asked "why was I flagged up on their check" and they claimed I didn't live at my address (nonsense, I've been living here for over 3 years) and never had problems taking out credit

They also claimed I'm not on Electoral Roll (again rubbish, my local electoral office provided me with my reference number & told me my insurers are wrong)

So, despite being NOT at fault, this "Cancelled Policy" will most likely cause me problems when renewing elsewhere in future & any claims

"Have you ever been declined insurance or had your policy cancelled"

Now I've read that Experian would hold this info IF it's on record. So I've just signed up to their site & my credit report is "Excellent" with 4 Positives/ 0 Negatives

Therefore am I safe to declare "No" to ever having insurance declined/ but in event of claim CAN they find out I had a policy cancelled?

Is there any other way to see IF this insurance company has logged me as having "cancelled policy" ?

Many thanks

If your policy was cancelled on incorrect grounds then you need to get this sorted.

Send a formal complaint and ask that they confirm back to you that they were wrong and that the cancellation has been removed from your record.

If you succeed with this then keep the letter on file in case this comes up at any time in the future (cancelled policies remain on your file forever!)

If you don't get a satisfactory reply (or they ignore your complaint for 8 weeks) then you can escalate your complaint to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you

The Experian database you can see won't show cancelled policies. Insurers share this type of information via a different database

Until this is resolved you do need to disclose your policy was cancelled to any insurers you approach for quotes. Explain the circs to them.

Why did you choose your Experian report?

Did you establish the insurer takes its data from Experian first?

If it doesn't it would be sensible to establish which CRA it does source from, then obtain that statutory report to see what is visible thereon.

You may be on the electoral roll, but the CRA in question is not showing it, so you need to remedy that and anything else which may be wrong.

It is sensible to obtain all three statutory reports a couple of times a year, that's the £2 one not attached to any subscription services which allege they give your "credit score" as these are a waste of time and money. In this way you can rectify any errors ahead of needing to be credit/identity checked.

  • Thank you both for the prompt replies & advice

@Quentin, I will write to the insurers in that case & ask why it was cancelled- since they told me over the phone they couldn't establish me as living at current address (how can I prove otherwise) whereas their second answer was "we cannot find u on electoral roll".

I have proof to dispute that since my local authority provided me
    with my electoral roll no.

Also, sorry but if they don't reply and I have to escalate it to FOS (what does that stand for)

    Thanks

oh reason why I checked Expedian is because I read on another very similar thread (found on here) somebody advised CUE is for claims/ underwrites whereas Expedian is for cancelled policies

I did try to ask how their enrichment check works/ which systems they use. They didn't give me an exact answer other than saying we use a wide variety of checks....

Terribly sorry, first time I've done this. So your advising me its best to pay £2 for all THREE statutory reports (at expedian)? Or elsewhere

    Many thanks

The three CRAs are Experian, Equifax/Clearscore and Call Credit/Noddle. You can check Noddle and Clearscore for free.

Don't check Expedia. They will only try to sell you a holiday. :)

CRAs don't have details of cancelled policies

I'm not talking about the insurance issue, as such.

I'm suggesting you check your voter's roll and credit information with all three CRAs so you can establish what it is the insurer might be able to see which us causing you the problem.

You obtain one statutory credit report from each of the three, Experian, Equifax and Call Credit, or their online variants and check what is visible on each.

You can then go back to the insurer and discuss any issues raised with them before you submit the complaint.

Had issues with my wife being on the electoral roll. Moved in 20 years ago and both names on it. Over the years her name vanished off the council tax bills, i assume they were too lazy to type 2 names.

Then for some odd reason her surname was changed on it?

Finally sorted it and she opened a joint bank account with me and they told me that i have only been living at this address for a few years also, not the correct 20 years.

I didnt query who they used.

  • Oh lovely, thank you all VERY much for clarifying everything to me!

Yes fortunately I only signed up to the Expedian free trial & will cancel before the 30day period

I will try the other CRA's as directed and thanks again, all your information is priceless!!

Question- I ended up renewing car insurance with existing provider who finally matched the "cancelled policy" premium amount (wish they would have just done so from start)

So the existing insurer only asked me "IF there have been any changes from last year to now". I answered NO & that car has not been modded/ personal circumstances/ address remains same etc

In unfortunate event of claim, and they use that as leeway in order not to pay out (once they find out I had policy cancelled elsewhere) without informing them....

Could I use the defence that they did not ask me "have u had insurance declined" question directly therefore I have not deliberately withheld any info?

    Thanks
