Coping without much refreshments whilst at work

Just wondering if anybody has to go a long while having anything to drink whilst at work and what could be done, sadly this new team don't appear to be tea or coffee drinks and I'm really struggling having been kept very well topped where I was previously, also the staff facilities are well away from working area, so it's not like I can nip to the loo and sneak in any kind of drink as I struggle to get up when not on break, having appreciated this new place is a lot more like a call centre than I had anticipated.

I could take in a flask but from when I remember doing this once before, it isn't really acceptable and I can understand why. (I've actually no idea how I used to get away with it.)

I really don't know how to go from 8:30 to my break which is set to be 14:00 hours without a cuppa plus it is really starting to bring on headaches, with drinking so little.

I've a fruitition bottle but I do love a hot, even if going cold drink!

Any ideas? Would this be a deal breaker. Then I'm thinking how do something like retail workers cope? Perhaps it gets easier?

The headaches could be from dehydration, but could well be caffeine withdrawal symptoms. The colour of your pee will tell you if you are dehydrated.

If it is the caffeine, yes you can wean yourself off it - don't have much on days off either to help this.

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time
  • Thanks, yep urine already changed. No break just straight to lunch at 2pm as of next week and there is no alternative, don't know that I can risk saying something other than handing it to them this possibilly isn't going to work.

Had another look today and it's a really small urn here so perhaps thats why people rarely have any drinks and oh boy I've no idea how they do it.

There is nothing stopping you having water.

Quitting a job due to a lack of coffee would be ridiculous. How long have you worked there?

Who said you can't have a drink at your desk??

Are you seriously thinking of giving up a job over a cup of coffee?

There's many occupations where people don't get a break until they have worked 6 hours.

Drink water. No one can stop you taking a min to get a drink of water. Even checkout operators are allowed water at the till

Get an insulated travel mug (or two) go into work five minutes earlier and fill the mug with a hot drink (or two). Good mugs keep a drink warm for a few hours.

You could even use a tea cosy or fleece to keep them extra warm for longer. Stand them in a suitable box whilst on your desk to prevent accidental spills.

At the end of lunchtime make a drink for the afternoon.

(I prefer plastic travel mugs as I don't like the metallic taint from metal flasks.)

+1 on the insulated travel mugs

One cup for when you arrive in the mornings and another mid morning.

Also, bring a bottle of water to sip on. Much better for you.

Have they actually said you can't go get a brew & bring it back to your desk or is that an assumption?
  • Can't be doing with individual quoting, here goes the phone rings constantly and I am also timed in my duties it would seem, so cannot leave my seat for fear the very timer shall be against me, there is no option to just wonder off and get even water or any drink as I would please, of course I have thoughts to myself it might just change the longer I be there, but honestly I'm not sure if is not something I want to entertain for the worser good.
I've have started to go in with my own supply of bottled cold drinks which is ok until it runs out due to silly o'clock to simply have lunch. (which I'm pretty sure is an unfortunate trait of last in or so many temps previously who accepted it, I get it)

I visit the ladies at lunchtime only.

My colleagues do not go for drinks as already said, so I am unable to ask anyone if they mind grabbing me a drink so feeling quite restricted. We can have snacks only at desk I'm informed, so perhaps something like watermelon will be a good idea for replacing fluids I'm thinking.

It certainly wasn't something I thought I needed to ask as it wasn't sold as hardened call centre. I was simply missing having a tea or coffee whilst I work even if I had to pay for the hot beverage. I'm really looking for idea's not a disprove session if you don't mind so I sincerely thank those who offered these.

In all honesty it sounds to me like you are overcomplicating this. You mention that a bottled cold drink works until you run out. I can't imagine it would take longer than a matter of seconds to find a cold tap to fill a bottle of water, but if that genuinely is an issue then bring two bottles. Or three. That's an easy solution to the dehydration problem.

On a more general point, you do seem to be making quite a few assumptions as to what is considered acceptable and what is considered not acceptable. Surely you can either ask a manager or fellow colleagues to ask whether you'll be penalised for getting a hot drink (either directly or indirectly) or whether you can bring your own hot drink with you?

I appreciate that critical comments don't help you, but you have made it sound like you are considering quitting a job because you can't get a hot drink. Whilst that may not be how you intended it to come across, that is how it reads, so on that basis I hope you can understand the somewhat incredulous responses to that.
