Cookie pops, we stayed in Marmaris. Expected it to be like Blackpool in the sun but was pleasantly surprised and taught me not to have pre conceived ideas about things. Have previously stayed in Side and Ovacik.0

Yep,we stayed in Marmaris 8 years ago, and it was a bit of our surprise, we had expected it to be a bit Blackpool in the sun, far from it, our hotel was on one of the hills, the view from our room looked out on forested hills and the view from the pool area looked down on the town and harbor area you could see the big cruise liners come in and go out.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Marmaris is definitely beautifully located.
Because of it's apparent reputation we stayed for a couple of weeks a few miles along the coast at lovely Icmeler. It was just before the season started so the weather was very pleasant [as opposed to too hot and sticky].
Several times we did the coastal walk to Marmaris, all the way passing the hotel strip, the Ataturk statue as far as the marina. Or we did the walk in reverse by getting the boat from Icmeler to Marmaris and then walking back. Plenty of good value places to stop at along the coastal path to have a drink and enjoy the views of the Bay.
Loved it. What Marmaris is like in July and August I don't know, but there are enough bars and other temptations to suggest that the place rocks around the clock.
Apart from Istanbul and the Bosphorus which can takes weeks to explore properly, there are so many places to stay strung along the Aegean and Mediterranean coastlines. We've had out of season holidays on the Bodrum Pensinsula [outstandingly scenic], Antalya and Lara, Side, Fethiye [Calis Beach, not my favourite], Cappadocia [nowhere on earth like it], and the capital city Ankara.
Favourite coastal area? The Bodrum Peninsula. The transport infrastructure is excellent, with loads of places to visit within easy reach by dolmus [mini bus] from Bodrum. Fethiye comes a close second.
Would we return? In the blink of an eyelid.:)0 -
is the advice still the same (to take some Lira and the rest in Sterling?) I saw on another forum where someone had just come back and they advised to take Euro as the pound wasn't considered to be as strong now?
Thanks:heart2: Cookiepops :heart2:0 -

Thanks
The £ v € has dipped since Brexit too.
If you buy € you'll pay for the privilege, and when you use the € in Turkey you'll get less vfm than using TL.0 -
We are off to Icmelar in 3 weeks & will be taking sterling0

This makes no sense, unless you already have euros bought prior to the referendum result. Since then the pound has less value against all currencies, including the euro - it's inescapable.Cookiepops wrote: »they advised to take Euro as the pound wasn't considered to be as strong now?

i think what someone was saying on the forum was where they had been in the past, the Sterling was very easily accepted, he found it not quite the same this time and said most things were in Euros, he would have found it easier just to take them rather than ask for the Sterling price:heart2: Cookiepops :heart2:0 -
It's still a mistaken concept. Prices should be requested in lire, the Turkish currency. Paying (or paying attention to) prices in any other currency is for the merchant's convenience of extra profit. Actually losing more by converting your pounds to euros to fit in with what the merchants 'want' is even less sensible.Cookiepops wrote: »i think what someone was saying on the forum was where they had been in the past, the Sterling was very easily accepted, he found it not quite the same this time and said most things were in Euros, he would have found it easier just to take them rather than ask for the Sterling priceEvolution, not revolution0
