Lidl do a huge range of gluten free, but not ready meals.

Sadly, not in this country! Other than the stuff that wouldn't have had gluten in the first place.

  • Thanks chaps.

I've left a message with the HV, no call back yet so will chase tomorrow.
Will also see where local Lidl is.
    Currently writing meal plan...

Feeling quite optimistic at the moment, because I am looking forward to our little girl being able to help with the cooking.

Work has offered me another day so hopefully that will help too.

    Seriously ?

Here in NI my local lidl have a stand of rice cakes, biscuits , flour etc, then their in store bakery has at least two loaves of gluten free bread plus assorted bread products which are gluten free ( usually found reduced )

Then they have sausages, burgers and a few other items I've noticed as being sold as gluten free in the chill section

Now tbh I'm no celiac so I don't hunt these items out. Just I worked so many years in catering I do tend to clock em if I see them

Also I tend not to be looking at processed foods, so these are items that are well displayed to have caught my eye

There was even a petition about it, which got a GF week in the special offers... https://www.change.org/p/uk-lidl-to-sell-gluten-free-products-in-their-uk-stores-as-they-do-in-their-irish-stores

They do sell rice cakes, but not the rest you mention.

    Wow

    Just shows regional differences

I know here in NI we don't get the same choices/products as you get in lidl uk, and it's different again in lidll ie. I know here that lidl have a commitment to local suppliers, all meat, most veg, bakery, deli are locally produced. Even the few ready meals they sell are produced just up the road. Perhaps having one of the biggest producers of baked gluten free products is the reason we have them as stock items?

Tell you what though, can't get strong flour or yeast. They only sell wheaten and that doesn't take yeast. I've been asking for years

I know you can get vegan cheese but is it ever cheap? Wouldn't you save money by using dried pulses rather than tinned?

The occasional cheap cheese is where the ALMOST entirely vegan bit comes in. :)

Having said that, there are a couple of homemade vegan cheeses that work out cheap - this one is based on carrots and potatoes, which sounds terrible, but it's actually really nice. http://www.veggieonapenny.com/vegan-cheese/

If you're able to bulk buy cashew nuts there are also several other options (plus I wonder whether you could substitute peanuts or peanut butter - I might have to try that).

You're right that dried pulses would be better than tinned - the reason I don't use them personally is that I work quite long hours and am also unwell, so time, energy and ability to plan ahead are also at a premium.
