You are commenting on something you clearly know nothing about.

Just as a matter of interest can I ask you why?

This thread is now getting out of hand with a lot of misinformation.

Companies are allowed to keep data if it is ''necessary''

The principles of the act are

They must make sure the information is:
    used fairly and lawfully.
used for limited, specifically stated purposes.
used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive,
    accurate.
kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary.
handled according to people's data protection rights.
    kept safe and secure.

If a debt is still owing (makes no difference if it is statute barred or not) then I think they can make a good case for saying it is 'neccessary'' for them to refuse a past defaulter new credit/loans and indeed good business practise.

well they do need to explain, why are they holding historic debt longer than the allowed 6 years....

Where do you get 6 years from? I think you are confusing with them not being able to report the file to the CRAs 6 years after account is closed or defaulted. They are not reporting it as far as I can see, they are just refusing to lend to someone who failed to clear their debts first time around.

There is nothing illegal in this, morality is subjective and nobody can tell another person if they can find something immoral or not, but in my opinion the only immoral thing here is in thinking you have a right to credit from someone you failed to pay back previously.

Some companies may be willing to take another risk and whack up the interest rates or just take a gamble, Barclaycard are doing the right thing and saving the rest of us money by refusing to take people with obvious bad histories of repayment. This hasn't been some clever computer decision, this is somebody on a list they are refusing to let default on them again.

The companies who think it's fine to take these sorts of risks over and over are more likely to charge a higher rate of interest to all to recoup their risk.

OP, this isn't a Barclays credit card thing, but more to do with their current accounts.

When my wife first moved here and needed a bank account to get her wages paid into, Barclays were one of the first banks we went to.

They told us in branch that she couldn't have a bank account without providing her banking history in statements and the like because she's Russian - and the Home Office told them to have this policy.

The Home Office said nothing about this when she received her visa, so I think they were talking crap: we had no problem opening one with Halifax (we tried Natwest and Nationwide, but the McDonalds manager where she worked was a lazy git so wouldn't write the letter to confirm her employment, and he also said their payroll couldn't pay into Nationwide for some reason I can't remember).

About 8 years later, they opened a branch in her home city....

So, it sounds like Barclays can't even keep their own stories straight in many departments.

No need to keep data even. Can be as simple as a do not trade with list of ex customers. .

    Hi
I applied last week for barclayscard after checking their eligibility score and got 95% score.I applied and was approved 11000 limit.Received card and activated online and did balance transfer online nearly &4000.Next day I can not sign in my account even entering correct login details.Receive error message to ring them on customer service number.I spoke with them and they said you need to register again as your account was inactive for long,I replied how it can be as I sign in on 2 days ago.The Indian lad said please register again.Well I register again and I can sign in.But when I checked balance it says account is suspended.I was surprised why?
I ring tbarclaycard customer service and revived funny response.Like sorry we can't hear you so phone is terminated. I made 8 to10 phone calls but they were trying to pretend they can't not hear me.So I checked my mobile by ringing my dad and he can hear me with no problem.Anyway after 8 to 10 phone calls ,one lady told me yours account is closed as it breached their term and conditions.I asked which one,she said you will received a letter.
Today I received a letter that my account is closed and they can't disclose me reason.I remembered I have Barclaycard default about 450 something and later I paid through Lowell in 2009.Although it was paid but i am banned in their system.
Something happens last year when they issued my card with 6000 limit but after one week close my account.
    So this ban really exists.

But I really don't like this bullying customer service. They were trying to pretend they can't hear my phone call and I end up with 8 to 10 phone calls. That's really insulting.I will never ever try to apply for Barclay's.I accept if I was banned why their eligibility checker recommend me to apply. Why they approved my card and issued me in first place. They did credit search and with hard search demanded my credit score. If I was banned they can refused me ,they simpler wasted my time.

My advice avoid Barclaycard as their customer service is pethetic.

You mean that they treat someone who treated them badly in the past as unwanted customer? Kinda you get what you gave when you've defaulted on your obligation some years ago.

And I can't figure out a reason why would the customer support, on 8 occasions with, most likely, 8 different people on other end make up a bad lie about not hearing you. Not to mention, what would they gain from it? Just makes absolutely no sense.

It makes no sense too me as well that's why I posted here.I read lot of comments from other people with similar poor customer service on other website.I said myself they can refuse me straight away or their eligibility check show me not eligible.By the way my credit history is good with no miss payments or defaults.I have good credit limit on others card too.Don't jump on conculsions without knowing facts.

The issue with the phone calls could be down to two non native speakers trying to communicate in English.

In terms of your default then if you paid lowells some time after your default the debt will probably have been sold on, so Barclays have accepted a low percentage and lowells will have profited, Barclays have still lost money on you. I wonder if you have actually completed the application correctly, it would make sense to not offer you credit but the fact they offer and withdraw might indicate that you are missing out information on your initial application.

If you have good limits elsewhere then why bother with Barclays in any case?

Your credit file isn't great if you've got a default, you can th and kid yourself but it reality it isn't.

Why did you try again this year, after Barclaycard dumped you last year? If your credit is as good as you claim, why do you need more credit from, of all people, Barclaycard especially? The whole world of Credit Cards should be available to you.

Phoning BC some eight times, seems to indicate you're a glutton for punishment.
