Trip to New York between Xmas and new year?

I don't think it offended anyone it just sounded a bit silly to people who've actually flown the route in midwinter and had entirely different experiences.
It'd be like me giving advice on South Africa because my boss goes on holiday there - I wouldn't do it because it's not somewhere I've personally experienced and there's bound to be people with first hand knowledge.
Dropping a thousand feet sounds like a bit of a fisherman's tale tbh

Well, when one person told me I thought maybe it was just one of her dramatic stories (she is one of those people where there's never a dull moment!), but then family members also mentioned the turbulence and the sudden drop, so I assumed it happened quite frequently?
The furthest I've been on a plane is Europe, so I can't really comment from personal experience.0 -
Offended? Nah.0

The worst turbulence I ever experienced was flying from Cyprus to Heathrow ...... the bigger planes used on the transatlantic routes don't get tossed around like the smaller planes can.
( That said most people flying between London and Cyprus don't experience any)I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Lovely time to go. We've been in December 5 times including getting married there. The Christmas decorations are stunning and they'll still be up. Yes it can get a bit chilly. The first time we went in 2007 and I need thermals but since then I've not needed them. My mum is 67 and has no problems at all. There's taxis readily available and the subway is really easy to use. I prefer it to London. Though we do prefer to walk everywhere.
The good thing about Nyc is that there's so much to do. Theatres, museums, shopping, eating(my personal favourite )you can go as fast or as slow as you like. It really is a city to make some amazing memories.
A few points made by other posters re turbulence and snow. I've never had turbulence on nyc flights any worse than any other flights. The worst I've ever experienced was Barcelona. The other point is correct re snow. We've only experienced it once and it literally came our of nowhere. Really quite heavy but within minutes snow ploughs were out going along the avenues. Have a game plan ready of what to if it snows. Things like museums etc. Obviously it could be really bad but we've been quite lucky xMarch 2014 Grocery challenge £250.000 -
Go for Thanksgiving, you get the parade then sales in the shops and the Christmas windows are unveiled. Ive been at this time and it was tshirt autumnal weather!0

I go to NYC most Decembers. the weather is variable- this year it was t- shirt weather a couple of days before Christmas. The snow came into the eastern states between Christmas and New Year- we were in maine by then but it went from sunshine to thick snow in 24 hours. Snow isn't an issue in the USA unlike the UK- it just isn't a drama. On Christmas Eve we were in t-shirts walking in New York State.
I fly to the USA many times each year and have never had turbulence really. Certainly no worse in December than any other time.
Sales are fab- especially if you are into designer stuff.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -

I found Thanksgiving much more crowded than December.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Has anyone done this - 4 adults (two in their 70s) and 17 year old. Or should we leave it til 2 jan because of the crowds? Or is it just a bad time to go 😳
If you don't mind the notoriously cold New York City winters it would make a good trip away for you all. Price-wise it may be better to go in the New Year, and avoid the Christmas shoppers. Personally I would rather leave it till around Easter time. Are you normally this obnoxious?
A quick glance at her posts would suggest the answer to that is yes. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Have you ever done that trip before by plane? Several people I know who have flown to the east coast of America say the plane often hits turbulence! The kids find it hilarious but the adults find it a bit disconcerting when the aircraft you're in suddenly drops about 1000 feet :rotfl:What a funny thing to say and what strange children you must have.
I've flown to New York several times in midwinter and never experienced the sort of turbulence the people you know are claiming. Maybe they were having you on or exaggerating.
Yes NYC is cold in December but you just dress appropriately. It certainly didn't stop us getting out and about .......although we may have scheduled extra hot chocolate stops.
We have travelled to America and Canada several times in winter, and have also experienced some pretty severe turbulence. Maybe not the plane dropping 1000 feet, but dropping a few 100 feet!
As for going to NYC in the winter. Be prepared for it to be VERRRRRRY cold. Much colder than we have it here! You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0
