Only been once in November and it was cold but as long as you are prepared you'll be fine. Nothing to add but just wanted to wish your family well and have a great time.

We were there the two days before the horrendous snow storm. It was so cold that we didn't do half as much as we had intended to.

The air froze as you breathed in! Horrible.

  • We flew out on Boxing Day and came back on New Year's Eve. New York is very hectic all the time. We chose this timer as we really wanted to see everything still decorated for Xmas, and it was worth it. The trees on Park Avenue were wrapped up in fairy lights, the Xmas tree at Rockefeller Centre was wonderful, and there were 3 ice rinks still operating. The sales were on, too, and 5th Avenue was particularly busy. One of the rinks is at Bryant Park and there was a lovely Xmas market to see, too. We went to the 'Top of the Rock' at Rockefeller Plaza, and the views over the city were stunning.

New Yorkers seem to wait for no-one, so I'd say you need to be able to keep up with the pace. Are your 70 yr olds quite spritely?

Have a wonderful time! NYC is fab at any time of year, but it was just beautiful at Xmas time. It was darn cold, though!

I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!

Have you ever done that trip before by plane? Several people I know who have flown to the east coast of America say the plane often hits turbulence! The kids find it hilarious but the adults find it a bit disconcerting when the aircraft you're in suddenly drops about 1000 feet :rotfl:

What a funny thing to say and what strange children you must have.
I've flown to New York several times in midwinter and never experienced the sort of turbulence the people you know are claiming. Maybe they were having you on or exaggerating.

Yes NYC is cold in December but you just dress appropriately. It certainly didn't stop us getting out and about .......although we may have scheduled extra hot chocolate stops.

Dozens of planes make the flight each day.

    Bizarre post.

I have only done New York in the summer but it is a lovely city. Most people in NY walk a lot,we never used the public transport as we had friends who live there who drove us around outside the city and we chose a hotel in the centre. It can be very cold around December so take plenty of warm clothes.

Surprising comments on 70 year olds! OH is 73, I'm 69 and most of our friends are in the same age group. All a hell of a lot more than 'sprightly'!

We do a hectic tour every year. And 'managed' walking around New York in the July heat last year. Occasional dips into licensed premises for sustenance, though.

It doesn't take seem to take much to offend some people on this board!! (thinks of recent PPRs dished out  ) Sorry if it seemed like a non-sequitur, it was just something that popped into my mind when I saw the thread.

Anyway, enjoy your trip OP, turbulence or not :D I hope you all have a lovely time in the Big Apple.
