Thank you - my mum has just been given the all clear regarding her breast cancer and we thought we would treat them. She's very healthy now and they really want to see New York around christmas time.
Might look at going before.
Have you checked how much travel insurance will cost in her situation?0 -

There are several specialist insurers that provide insurance in these circumstances. Macmillan signpost them for a start. xxx0 -

I know - that's why I questioned the cost rather than the possibility.;)0 -

Avoid (unless you can afford in time and money to use cabs) the area close to the Javits Convention Center it's miles from the subway. There a good deals to be had, all you're looking for is a bed and a lockable room.
If you're into doing things, the museums have in general suggested donations but can be done on a budget based on what you can afford. The New York Pass while seemingly pricey saves money if you're wanting to do a lot of touristy things and gives priority access.
There is a big ticket booth in Times Square, looks like a giant set of steps, always good same day deals for Broadway.
There is always a big christmas market on the lower left side of Central Park every year just past Columbus Circle. It's a magical market.
If you don't want to actually go to Liberty/Ellis Island catch the free Staten Island ferry for amazing views of the islands and Skyline. There are short and longer cruises up to about 3.5 hours all around Manhattan island, it is part of the NY pass or just direct. I would really recommend the big river cruise, you'll see parts of NY you never imagined.
It's an amazing city, and I'm sure you'll all love it xxx
Thank you - I briefly visited about 20 years ago  when coming back from a wedding at Niagara and my daughters dropped in for a few hours. My parents want to take my daughter to Broadway and ive never been with my husband, so it will be lovely for us all. Lots of homework to do xNever again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

What better reasons! Making memories is the most important thing.
I've never been to NY, but have always wanted to go at that time of year too....it looks magical!
I'm sure your Mum will be chuffed to bits, and will be busy planning her itinary as soon as it's booked! So glad to hear that she's healthy again and got the all clear.

We often go end February/early March, and it can be very cold but even when it snows, it is a dry cold, if that makes any sense. Last year, I invested in some sets of silk thermal underwear and had a lovely time - was so warm and comfortable for the entire trip. I got them off Amazon and they weren't very expensive and worth every penny.
I wouldn't expect it to be mobbed between Christmas and New Year, though Time Square will probably be very busy on New Years Eve. It is an amazing place to visit and I am sure you and your parents will have a great time. There are also lots of ways of enjoying the city if you are not very mobile. Its not a particularly big city geographically and for that reason, taxis aren't very expensive if needed, and most tourist attractions have plenty of places where you can sit down and rest for a while if needed.0 -

bad time to go its really cold.. weathers not like the UK for that time of yearHas anyone done this - 4 adults (two in their 70s) and 17 year old. Or should we leave it til 2 jan because of the crowds? Or is it just a bad time to go 😳

New York is lovely over Christmas and no busier than anywhere else. We went about 6 years ago and would definitely recommend going at that time0
