Which is more or less what I said in OP as they still gave me a complaint ref number and I said in another post that it was within their own company. I wasn't trying to infer that by taking the money they were stopping me from raising the complaint elsewhere. I do however think this should be sorted as it is very unfair to the customer, you would think banks especially would be doing everything to keep things fair given their previous record with PPI. Never personally got caught up in that but suffered the numerous cold calls.

Tried saynoto0870? Loads of alternative numbers for Lloyd's on there. If you don't have internet access, ask someone who does to look it up for you, maybe? If there is a number for "if calling from abroad" as has been mentioned, miss out the +44 and do dial the zero if calling from a landline - it does work, done it loads of times.

Rather than looking for unofficial numbers on a third-party website, start by looking for the replacement 01, 02, 03 or 080 numbers on the official website.

Customer services, financial services, public services and healthcare services are no longer allowed to use 084, 087 or 09 numbers. Most have now changed their numbers.

Making a Google search or looking on third-party and unofficial websites is opening people up to being caught out by the widespread 'call connection service' scam.

    * If it's written as +44 (0) - which is the recommended standard format - don't dial the 0.
Showing an international format number with a '(0)' in it is the exact opposite of the recommended format. See the E.123 standard for details.

The international standard requires only digits that are dialled from abroad to be printed after the +. It recommends no parentheses within the international format. It allows parentheses in national format numbers, these surround the area code or trunk code and area code. For national numbers, the standard says that all digits enclosed in parentheses should be dialled when the number is called from outside the area.

A London number could be written as any of the following...
    020 3999 0000
    (020) 3999 0000
    +44 20 3999 0000
Some may prefer to add hyphens in place of some or all of the spaces.

You will sometimes see +44 (20) 3999 0000 but this last format is not recommended.

  • Personally, I believe there has been a lot of incorrect information posted here.

1.Money given not to lodge a complaint

I highly doubt this is the case. It is likely that a complaint has been opened, and an offer to resolve the complaint - of the goodwill gesture, and a refund to put the consumer back in the position that the issue should not have affected them, has been made. This benefits the bank, because they can state that they have resolved the complaint to the consumers satisfaction by the close of the next business day. It is still likely that the complaint will be recorded - and hopefully recorded as upheld.

As someone who works for a competitor, I can state that LLoyds Banking Group are well known in the industry for taking the approach of handing out money in order to bring complaints to a consumers satisfaction and for resolving most complaints at a basic level, extremely quickly, compared to some of it's competitors.

It is good that Lloyds have put in place the message to remind users, but do bear in mind that some people have inclusive landline minutes to 0845/70. Lloyds have updated all there phone numbers in the phone book and also on the majority of their printed publications. Looking at a letter that I've recently been sent, they've provided two numbers of 01 (which states if you prefer not to us an 03 number) and a 08. Lloyds have always been got at this, for example: http://www.mediacentre.lloydstsb.com/media/pdf_irmc/mc/press_releases/2008/June/6308pressrelease.pdf - which was published in 2008 states '
Students can open an account at any Lloyds TSB branch, by phone on 0845 3 000 000 or
online at https://www.lloydstsb.com/student. If you need to call us from abroad, or prefer not to use
our 0845 number, you can also call PhoneBank® on 01733 347007

Hope this makes some sense. For reference, I have no known vested interest in LLoyds Bank.
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

To make any ex-gratia or compensation payment they have to record it as a complaint. Nothing underhand has gone on.

You can reject an offer and escalate to the FOS if you choose to.

If they just changed the number on their statements there would be no need to offer compensation, is it so difficult to do?

How about if you see an 0845 number, just dial 0345 instead ?

Doesn't really answer the question though does it.

    What exactly is your question?

The FCA rules regarding call costs are set out in Chapter 7 of their General Provisions sourcebook (GEN 7). It states that firms "must not bind the consumer to pay more than the basic rate for the telephone call".

So Lloyds are free to operate their 0845 number for existing cardholders (alongside the 0345 equivalent). There isn't a requirement for them to change the 0845 number that's printed on your statement either.
