It's the customer's choice, keep the old plan or upgrade to EE for a new handset.
Or to an EE sim-only contact. Ask for your PAC and Retentions might offer you a decent deal.
    Evolution, not revolution

That too, I didn't mention it because the OP made a comment about wanting a new phone.

When you say cut down your SIM do you mean literally cut it down so that it fits in an iPhone?

When you get a new phone will you just switch the SIM over again?

Yes, that is correct. I had a full size sim and the iphone 4S takes a micro sim card. There are videos on youTube on how to do it.

I think the new iphones have an even smaller sim, a nano, not so sure I would want to try to cut down to that size. However I think you can pay ten pound or so to Tmobile/EE and you get a new sim... if not I will move on anyway :)

So in summary the best course of action for me - if I want a new phone - is probably to buy the unlocked phone on Amazon / wherever, and then put my T-mobile SIM in it? Sounds like the SIM will last - with its current deal - for a while.

    Does that sound right?

Well it worked for me and I am still on one of the old T-mobile deals with a different phone to the one I was given as part of the contract.

Yes, you can use any compatible unlocked handset with the sim, I've been doing that for years.
