Wedding Present Kitchen completed 6 weeks late :( Pay in full?

Options
Hi, just after some advice.

My wedding present to my wife was a lovely new kitchen and I based my choice of kitchen supplier / fitter on a completion date 2 weeks before the wedding so everything would look perfect and no stress of work being carried out on the run up to the wedding. We had guests staying and wedding preparations obviously as a priority.

I spoke to 4 suppliers and one said they could definitely complete on time with an estimated completion on the 24th April. The wedding was the 14th May, so there was a 3 week cushion for any issues.

The completion date passed and so did the wedding. There were missing door panels which only arrived on the 20th May a week after the wedding so all our pots and pans and crockery were on show. My wife was devastated and embarrassed. I understand delays happen but I'd made a promise to her based on the suppliers promise so I was in the dog house big time. It was incredibly stressful.

The kitchen was £9000 and I was told to retain £1000 to "ensure all elements of the kitchen are correct and meet my expectations".
Obviously it didn't and caused a great deal of stress but I want to be fair and reasonable.

Consumer rights suggest I am entitled to compensation for the delay but what figure is reasonable for completing 6 weeks late and the promise made to win my business based on the wedding deadline which they failed to meet by a long long way?

Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you are talking about consumer rights, then you will need to quantify your losses.

Ultimately, this 'dispute' would be resolved in a Small Claims Court and the judge would expect you to demonstrate what you losses are and show that you have mitigated them.

I would suggest that you do all you can to come to an amicable agreement with the service provider.

Did you agree completion date in writing and are there any reasons beyond his control that the supplier can claim led to delays (eg design or colour change, additional work, unexpected work) etc...

The world will keep spinning wont it? :rotfl:

Sounds like much ado about nothing.

Its installed now, enjoy it rather than putting your energy into this.....Unless you have something in writing to say it will be completed by X, you wont get much, if anything, other than a half hearted apology.

We wouldn't have made it up the aisle if my husband gave me a new kitchen as wedding present!!!

Quite so. I wouldn't have been able to enjoy my (her) kitchen what with, my blacked out eyes and broken limbs.

I'm dying to know what you plan to buy for your first anniversary for her

Perhaps if the sight of your crockery and pots and pans is so dreadful as to be devastating and embarrassing you should have replaced them !

In all seriousness if you do want to make a claim you're going to need to come up with a better consequential loss than that -It just sounds silly (not to mention if you get a female judge she might not think "buying my wife a new kitchen "-is not a gift - but more of a home improvement that will benefit you both ). You'd want a court to take you seriously presumably.

I once bought my wife a new fridge-freezer as a present and she loved it - every time she opened the door her eyes lit up!
