For around £30 buy a DVD Player that can play DivX / xViD / MPEG4 files direct.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper Photogenic
unless you want HD output then you cant go far wrong than a modded xbox with xbox media centre for playing xvids/divx etc
i know its not really what the op was asking but all that recoding time is a pain compared to a machine that plays it as is.
can even stream from your pc

Two brilliant free ones I've used are Flicker and AVI2DVD. Follow the guides on how to use them on videohelp.com
Sorry, that should have been DVDFlick (which is also available as a portable application-Nice-) and not flicker. What was I thinking of???
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • OK I've installed Nero, which has decided to start itself up upon startup and start indexing my files. That's slowed my PC so much I can't even type properly (it's taken almost 30 mins to get to MSE and another 5 mins to type this). I can't even use the mouse properly as it's so jerky.

RAM usagei s 99-100% and each time I end the process under task manager it just starts up again. I even ended the tree but up it popped again. What the hell is it doing and how do I stop it, I can't even get in to msconfig.

Oh btw my PC is a Core2Duo 1.8Ghz with 1GB RAM, only a few months old.

Please help me to get rid of this trojan software. That's what it is, I never asked it to run at startup, I never gave it permission to run at startup, I never gave it permission to index my files...

Nero caused me all sorts of problems and interfered with Vista's icons and Vista Media Center. It may be the right time wannabe to do a fresh OS install and then install your PDFCreator and AVI2DVD and get rid of all the bloatware on your system. Did you manage to get a HD for backing up?

  • Thanks both - I've now uninstalled it but strangely it's working fine on my old faithful laptop (it's 3 years old and better than the new one, honestly!).

I didn't order the HD over the wknd as it wouldn't have made a difference - I found this one on Amazon which I was gonna order in the next hour or so which is cheaper than ebuyer (albeit 100GB less), look ok?

Yep, that should be excellent. Had WD 3 years ago and still going strong.:j

  • Great, ordered it. Now to keep an eye on it for the next 30 days in case the price comes down under amazon's price change promise :D
