[HELP, Nero is hogging my PC!] Burning XVID files for DVD Player - which program?

Any recommendations for a (preferably free :D) program that will burn xvid and divx video to a DVD on my laptop without whimpering that there's no decoder available?

I have sonic "My Dvd LE" supplied by Dell, which refuses to burn any video to dvd because it's supposedly lacking the encoder.

There are no available updates for the program and I've got the codecs already as I downloaded them and can view the video on my laptop without probs.

There are so many programs out there, I'd appreciate any suggestions for what to use so I can use the DVD to view on my DVD player

    Hi
I think that you just need to use Nero or Roxio or whatever.
But burn the disc as 'data'.

Easiest thing to do, is to download and install the latest version of Nero 7. You'll get a fully functioning 15 day trial; http://www.nero.com/nero7/ena/nero7-demo.php

Clearly you do not want to burn your video as Data.

NeroVision 4, within the Nero 7 suite, will convert your .avi video.

I'm not too sure about that. OP only said that he wanted to 'burn xvid and divx video to a DVD'.

Hmm he did say "burn xvid and divx video to a DVD on my laptop without whimpering that there's no decoder" which would look like he's trying to convert it. I can't see why you'd get that message if purely trying to burn a file to DVD.

  • Sorry about the ambiguity (edited title now) I failed to get a cable to get the S-Video signal from my laptop to the Scart on the TV so resorted to burning it on DVD to play on my DVD Player and get it on a (slightly) bigger screen that way. An idiot on ebay decided to tell me a cable would work. It arrived, didn't work, then they decided not to answer any emails:rolleyes:

Any ideas why sonic isn't working, or maybe it's just rubbish software, why else would dell be bundling it with all the other rubbish on here! :rotfl:

So, Nero looks like my best bet for this purpose? :T

It's normal that bundled software lacks a few features. It's to encourage you to spend a little to bring it up to spec.

Nero 7 will complete the task, but it's only free for 15 days. :)

For free software, you can take a look at Coles or K-lite codec packs or Mediacoder; http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

Two brilliant free ones I've used are Flicker and AVI2DVD. Follow the guides on how to use them on videohelp.com

ConvertXtoDVD is what I am using now as it is so easy to use and works great but is not free. Hope this helps.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • The download speed from nero.com is a paltry 61.5k so I'll be about an hour getting that! In the meantime I'll look at the free software listed, cheers again
