My new to me car came with the Welsh flag identifier on the numberplate, which, being Welsh, I have no problem with. ( other opinions may differ...
)
Now, big European trip coming up, ( since the shenanigans in France now, it's the ferry to Spain, as much as I hate boats...) how is Johnny Foreigner going to view this symbol of pride on my numberplate ? Do I need the common or garden EU GB style plates ?

Not number plates, but a GB sticker is in theory needed. Not sure how much this is enforced overseas.0

I forgot about an old school GB plate !
I foresee a trip to Halfrauds........:TStarted my job at the bottom and liked it0 -

Some countries are more picky than others - don't go near Germany or Austria without a proper EU GB plate or the old fashioned oval GB sticker.
It must be a white oval with black letters - the square blue ones with pretty gold stars are not acceptable.
I was given a 10 minute lecture on this in an Autobahn service area.
The ferry companies used to hand them out free - but those days have long gone, I think - they still sell them on board of course.0 -
Yes, the last times I did a ferry, Portsmouth to Bilbao( did I tell you I hate boats....) in 2007, there was no freebee GB plate. Nor the return in 2008, Santander to Plymouth
Thanks to all,

Could be wrong here, so pinch of salt and all that ...
The EU symbol and the approved country identifier (F, D, GB etc) is the standard. However, I believe that UK has a small opt-out here, where we can use the national flag (Union flag, St Andrew's & St George's crosses, draig goch etc) and an identifier such as ENG, CYM, SCO, ALB etc. How official this is, I don't know, but I see loads of cars/bikes in Europe with these number plates, so they can't be checking them at the border and turning people back.
On the other hand, a small magnetic GB plate from Halfords is only a few quid and solves the issue.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
If your number plate displays anything other than the EU flag with GB below it then you must have an oval GB plate in addition.
My German Strassenpolizei was correct - gov.uk agree:

I'd rather have the pox than display the EU symbol."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0
