But I don't understand. No one is ever 100% on time, ever. Life gets in the way?

Ive only ever been late once and that was when i was knocked over. My boss was fine with it and even tried to insist i took the rest of the day off (paid too). Been working now for about 13 years. The people i have worked with who regularly arrived late (whatever the reasons) didnt ever last too long im afraid.

Its a bit different than being late every couple of weeks.
  • I see.

I just don't understand how people who work in a busy commuter city manage to get to work on time at 9am every single day without fail - especially if public transport is thrown in the mix.

Not 100%, no, but that's different from fairly frequently.

My lads and lass, don't know what their start times will be until later in the day, that's the way our work goes. But lateness is not and never has been an issue.

They should have sorted out your contract by now though, they need to get their act together as well.

Its not too difficult really. You know what time you need to be at work and most public transport has fairly accurate timetables (especially in comuter cities). When ive need to catch the bus i always get the bus earlier than i think (not to bad when busses are every 10 minutes) and if i get there way too early i just go for a coffee.

Your start time is that a start time. Ive never known it to be a aim to be around that time.

Some times things do go wrong (car accidents, sick children, broken down train, suicide in front of train) but the majority of the times they dont. If your late every few weeks it suggests you need to change something in order to get there on time. If you cant you should expect them to be unhappy with your persistent lateness. Just how most work works.

If i was you i would be tempted to only look for jobs with flexible hours, it should suit you better.
  • This wouldn't be fairly frequently...thats the point. It would literally be 5-10 days a year and they'd be warned in advance and then it would only be 5-15 mins.

I think the issue is more it's not for an acceptable reason.

You should get a taxi on these days as it is something you are aware of in advance.

Acceptable lateness is something you can't warn of in advance.

They plan to get in early. If they are late it then is usually due to a one-off event e.g. RTA or similar.

Can you get to work BEFORE 9am on the days your liftshare isn't available?

Well going off what youve said youve probably got little to no flexibility with how many more days you can get away with this year. Hence why they want to monitor it.

As mentioned above there are taxis. Something ive had to do, paying £10+ for a taxi when your hourly rate was £6.something. (normally because i had a steaming hangover though, so i dont expect any sympathy for it!)

Btw it sounds like theyd be more than happy with you if your lateness wasn't an issue. It wouldnt be too hard for them to turn around to you and just say not to bother coming in but it sounds like they want to give you an oppotunity to sort the issue out.

For the times that you would be late, you book a half day or full day holiday from your quota?
