Thanks everyone for being positive :) I'm quite open to which resort I stay at as long as its not too far from Malaga airport, so thanks Doshwater for recommending Fuengirola. I'll certainly look at what its like.

When I'm doing the activity holiday I plan to get out and about to visit the nearby villages. For some reason that doesn't make me anxious but going to the beach resorts does. Maybe its the thought that there will be couples and I might stand out?

Can't help with Spanish beaches (don't do beach holidays and try to avoid tanning), but happy to share my experiences as a solo traveller (male though).

A couple of years ago I went on a city break weekend with Friendship travel (to Bologna, as I love Itlay), which was entirely designed for solo travellers - all single rooms, no single supplement. It's the first time I've done something like that, as I wanted to get away due to some stuff that was going on at home, but didn't want to be completely isolated and stew over it, so the fairly structured nature of it (guide present all weekend, accomapnied itineraries both days, evening meals together arranged by the guide etc) suited my needs.

I'm a naturally quiet person but some of others were not so I did talk with everyone and had a good time. It was female dominated though, I was one of only three men out of about a dozen!

This year I went to Rome (Italy again ;) ) for a week, but that was not with a tour company, that was just me so I booked everything myself. I still find asking "avete un tavolo per una persona?" (do you have a table for one?) a bit awkward, but the restaurants were all quite happy to take a solo diner, and I had a great time. Didn't talk to many people apart from waiters and the woman that ran the b&b (everyone I met was lovely, as Italians always seem to be in my experience), but I went there for the history, the architecture, the museums and the galleries and of course the food, and had a great time.

I just spent four days wandering around Madrid alone as a tourist.

It was joyfully liberating after 23 years as a couple!

Not the same as your circumstances I know. But enjoy being who you are and enjoy doing whatever you want to do.

There's nothing wrong with being single or being single abroad.

When I was first divorced I was ver self conscious about going into restaurants on my own. Don't think twice about it now. But you might want to consider joining up with others in the same boat - have a look at MeetUp, lots of holidays for lone travellers. And there are travel agencies like Solo who also organise holidays for singletons.
  • hi,

I'm new on here and I was going to book a holiday on Thursday it'l be me my partner and two sons (aged 4 and 8 months when we fly) and I got told by a friend that under 12 months old go free and shouldn't class as a free child place and that I should also get my other son free as well, does anyone else know of this?

This thread is funny. Being alone is not weird. :) I would think that forcing yourself to travel with a load of single strangers is more so.
You need to do exactly what you want to do. No compromise. Going travelling alone helped me to combat my shyness by forcing me to communicate with people.
    Two nights is ridiculously short.
My first solo trip was to Singapore(of course I didn't stay there for long) for two weeks. A wad of cash and a change of underwear in a tiny rucksack and not the slightest idea of what was ahead of me. Was great.
Don't allow fear to hold you back. Self catering is not a bad idea. You can eat at home when convenient and out when you don't feel like sitting at home and want to eat out.

This place is ideal for singles and they offer a variety of interesting workshops. You'll make friends with like-minded people http://www.cortijo-romero.co.uk/

Fuengirola is at the end of the train line from Malaga airport. Only about €2.50 each way so easy to get to. The train means that it's easy to explore other resorts in the area or pop into Malaga for the day.

It's not the prettiest resort in the world (nowhere on the Costa Del Sol is!) but it's one of my first choices when I need a few cheap days in the sun. As a single person, avoid package holiday operators and just book your flight to Malaga and hotel separately. I don't think I'd so self catering though as there are hundreds of places to eat and competition keeps prices low.

Surely that's the point of going self catering, that you can eat out in a variety of restaurants?
