Thanks for all the replies. As I said right at the start I don't know what engine it is and I'm unlikely to find out. I've only seen the car briefly once, I'm reasonably sure it's a 3 series, and it's a few years old (maybe early 00's), and it's a coupe, but beyond that I know nothing. I have to assume that there was a dipstick before, but I have no idea whether there is a manual or why my friend doesn't at least have some idea where in the engine the hole would be.

PS, No, I'm not DM, although I did once own a Yaris!

What do you mean by "a few years old"? early 00's would make it maybe 15 years old? Did you mean that or did you mean early 2010s?

OK, I have some resolution to this.

First up, I was wrong about it it being petrol, it's actually a 330 Cd, 54 reg.

Second, my friend called in at her (independent) garage yesterday, after some searching they removed a cover on the engine and under it found the original dipstick, which had not been replaced correctly. I don't know exactly where the hole is but it now has the dipstick back in it and my friend has a spare in case of any future mishap.

Thanks for both the informative and entertaining posts, hopefully any remaining spats between members can be restarted in another thread.

It would have been far more entertaining if you had registered as a new user and entertained the little clique in here by fulfilling their need to be a pseudonym for a troll that they imagine is the most important thing in their lives.

So you clearly think it is correct for the Forum to be continually ruined by trolls?

Seems funny how you have an issue with those that dislike trolls by don't seem to have an issue with the Trolls themselves.

That does seem a little on the strange side.

And not every new poster or somebody with a seemingly simple or strange problem is a Troll.

But an awful lot of trolling posts on this Forum have a very similar structure.

In fact one of the Trolls on here has actually popped up on other Forums apparently, I think one was a BMW Forum.

    I can't remember exactly.

The forum name used was a variation of DM though.

In fact you can see trolling posts of a similar structure in other MSE boards.

They just ruin the forum as sometimes people do have questions that may seem silly but they are 100% genuine.

But nice to see people posting up attacking those who are fed up with Trolls and out then when they spot them.

After all without Trolls nobody would be looking for Trolls or be fed up with them.

It honestly doesn't bother me, I see trolling as a waste of time and disruptive, but the best way of dealing with it is by ignoring it. To continually refer to it is far more disruptive, and you just use it as an excuse for your own entertainment. If you think it is trolling why not report it, and then ignore it, it will rapidly die off as it moves off the front page as no responses occur.

You accuse almost every new poster with a slightly odd problem of being a troll, and upset many people who have genuine issues or are simply misguided.

I found this Thread somewhat entertaining until the last couple of posts!

But you were all looking for the hole in the wrong place.... (Sgt. Pepper's LHCB...)
    # I read the news today, oh boy, four thousand holes in Blackburn Lancashire#

Or maybe Bernard Cribbins knew where it was...
#There we were, diggin' this 'ole,#
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
