Hardly irony Paul more like you being the argumentative troll that you usually are on here, Enjoy your day now.

I'm not being a troll. Merely curious as to how you've concluded that she knew she needed a dipstick - presumably because there was a hole with no dispstick in it - and now cant find the hole?

And yes, i am enjoying my day, thanks.

While not wishing to butt into your private argument it's my assumption that she had checked the oil on a previous occasion and therefore knew that there had been a dipstick, but on this occasion it wasn't to be seen and she can't remember precisely where it was.

Is she looking under the bonnet or in the bit at the back where the shopping goes

If she goes into a garage and says she wants a dipstick putting into her hole I'm sure they'll help :eek:

    Ooh er matron.

The trouble with assumptions is they can easily be wrong, unfortunately we all tend to assume things on these forums rather than getting the facts. :D

    No criticism intended.;)

    No problem. Sounds plausible

Just bemused that our friend seems "outraged" over something on the internet.

She's semi-retired now but was head of biology at a prestigious school so I'm pretty sure she knows what goes in which hole :D.

Thanks for all the replies. As I said right at the start I don't know what engine it is and I'm unlikely to find out. I've only seen the car briefly once, I'm reasonably sure it's a 3 series, and it's a few years old (maybe early 00's), and it's a coupe, but beyond that I know nothing. I have to assume that there was a dipstick before, but I have no idea whether there is a manual or why my friend doesn't at least have some idea where in the engine the hole would be.

PS, No, I'm not DM, although I did once own a Yaris!

OK then - it should have a dipstick at that age.

They were phased out during the lifetime of the E90s

If the dipstick is missing, then the oil blowing out the hole would be a big clue.

If the plastic pulley-outie handle is broken off (more likely) then she will have to look for the remnant, usually close to the bulkhead in the middle of a rats nest of pipes & wires
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Dunno about BMWs but it took me a while to find dipstick on my Saab, it's attached to the filler cap.
