  • Chaps,

Can someone expain what does CAP price mean in relation to car? (sorry for the obvious question to someone) Does autotrader's website represent CAP prices? I've read this forum and a little bit confused now... Also a quote taken from here :
"The sale achieved the equivalent of 107.5% of CAP Clean across the board, with individual vehicles achieving up to 124% of CAP"
The auction happened in Dec '07 and circumstances were diffrent, but anyway, why dealer would purchase a car for a higher price? Or those were private buyers?

    TIA

Historically that has always been the case. However, many manufacturers and traders are having such a hard time shifting metal that, if you have the cash, you can get massive percentages off the cost of a new car as long as you are willing to haggle and even pit one dealer's price against others on like-for-like cars!
I've heard of some dealers so desperate to clinch a deal that they will even BOGOF some cars, albeit the 'free' one being a few years old
Another point I forgot earlier: Unless you are very au fait with car mechanics and know what to look out for, try to take an experienced car mechanic along with you when you are ready to buy at auction to vet the car as thoroughly as possible. All too many cars may seem fine on the surface, but hide hard use and poor servicing under the skin. Some sellers are all too willing to spend £100 on a thorough valet when the car needs £1000 spending on it to make it as good as it looks!
As ever, the important bye (buy?) words are: Caveat Emptor ;)

I was interested in the VW Scirocco (before i started looking at auction) but for some reason they would only take 1k off. which i thought was a bit stingy in this current climate. but they said the margins on it are very thin to start with.

    CAP is short for

    CAP Motor Research Limited

They are widely acknowledged as the foremost experts in current and future vehicle pricing in a variety of venues - private, trade, auction, etc.
However, no matter how accurate they may be in overall prices in any particular sector of the market, no-one can possibly forecast individual prices 'on the day' (see previous response) which can easily go well above or well below the average price - and often does

If you have a reasonable discount in mind then go back and put it to them. If they say no just walk out and get the equivalent Skoda! It's the same car, built with the same technology and to the same standard :p

Before I finish you must be aware that the 'hammer price' at auction is not the final word. Every auction will add their own buyers (and sellers) premium to that. It could be a simple percentage - 10% to 20% per sale - or a stepped price; say £30 up to £999, £50 for £1,000 to £2,000 and so on. It is essential to read the auction rules before bidding. This also applies to possible 'returns' where the vehicle may be "significantly not as described".
eg. Many years ago I bought a damaged TR7 for my late wife which was described as having 3 months MOT & tax. When the paperwork arrived it was only 3 weeks on each. Because I found out within 7 days I was able to return it and got a full refund :T As an aside: I had factored in the repair costs, but the time constraints made it less of a bargain than I had calculated on.
  • HC,

What does 'size' mean on auctionview in relation to price, normally dispalyed as 10+ etc??

    Don't like the Skoda?

    No problem!

Get the Audi as they are also part of the same group with all cars made on identical production lines and to the same standards. In most cases the underlying chassis and running gear come from the same parts bins
  • Hi, Only the one diesel manual I'm afraid

VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG 2.5 TDI SE Station Wagon, BLUE*3*, 5 Doors, Manual Transmission, Diesel, 59567 Miles, Margin. SF06WWB
    Registered 14-07-2006 Derby 05-02-2009
    New : £30642 Ret: £13250 Cln: £10650 Avg:£9925 Blw: £9050
    New: £33372 Ret: £14421 Trd: £10813

    HC

Thanks for looking. I found one at Birmingham using the weekly BCA catalogues but it went for 7K. As as private buyer, do the VAT marginal ones go for less than VAT qualifying, or does it make little difference. What about the time of year - should I wait 'til the new reg is out.
